Hello @judykchase and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It is great to see that you have found another member, @lindabf, who you can relate to by way of your experience with fosomax. Finding someone who understands and supporting one another is what Connect is all about. I will let the pair of you continue to connect and share!

@judykchase Thank you for sharing your experience and engaging Mayo Clinic Connect so you can get more information. I would like to invite @parus, @cherriann, and @butch24350 back to the conversation to discuss their time taking Fosomax.
Can you discuss exactly what you experienced with the drug and when you realized it was effecting you?

As I remember, it came on slowly and got progressively worse. The day that I took Fosamax the side effects were worse. I had stomach pains and loose bowels. I had to stay close to a bathroom in the morning. Was always afraid of having an accident! It was awful! I should have stopped taking this drug much sooner.

I experienced abdominal ache and burning for about a half day every time I took Fosamax. Over time I also started to have intermittent aching in the groin area. At night I started to have bone pain in my lower legs that was severe enough to wake me up. Also, cramping, charlie horse type pains in legs and feet that often occurred at night, but would sometimes happen during the day, too. I did not experience the leg and groin pain until I'd been on Fosamax for six or more months, and from that point it intensified. I did stop taking it after several years, but my doctor later persuaded me to go on it again. I started it once more, but with same side effects. After media began reporting some very negative reports on this and other osteoporosis drugs, I did some serious research, and stopped taking it. I haven't taken any osteoporosis drugs for a number of years - I try to eat the right things for bone health, exercise, etc. I feel great and haven't had any bone issues to date.

Would you mind telling us your age and what your risk factor is? I am trying to decide if I am going to start Tymlos and it's a huge decision. I guess it never occurred to me that when you finish one you have to start another. I haven't heard an overwhelming response of people got much benefit from taking these drugs.

I was on Fosamax just over a year but had to switch to another drug due to extreme abdominal pains within the first 24-28 hours after taking it - as I described to my physician, it felt as if I was getting shot in the stomach. It started out less severe, with just overall not feeling well during that day, but when it progressed to that extreme I knew it couldn't be good for my personal body.

I have been on raloxifene (Evista) over a year and a half now, and though I take it daily, I take it with none of the side effects I experienced with Fosamax. In fact, at my last DEXA (in January), one of my scores actually improved, and the other only slightly declined (whereas I'd declined quite a bit while on Fosamax).

That said, I'm an atypical osteoporosis patient due to my age (30s), so I can't say how much of my own experiences might be attributed to age alone and where my body is in parts of it's "life cycle."

I tried Fosamax for one month with side effects as mentioned by @cheriann and since I deal with chronic pain I decided it was not worth it. I choose to be more careful and the best advice to self is to not fall!!

I think that you made the right decision. Trying to eat a calcium rich diet, taking Vitamin D and a calcium pill and exercise especially weight lifting! All the osteoporosis drug have side effects! Judy

I first took Fosamax in my early 50s and am now 69. My numbers were not good and my doctor told me my risk factor was high. I do not have bone scans anymore, so I cannot tell you my present numbers. For several years after stopping Fosamax my doctor asked me to test when I went in for yearly wellness check, but I have declined as I have no plans to start taking osteoporosis drugs no matter what the scan results numbers would be, so it would serve no purpose to have them. Each of us is different, and what I choose to do, may not be the right choice for others, so I strongly urge you to do your own research. I do understand your concerns and believe you are right, that many of the osteoporosis drugs that are offered require you to stay on that type or another one permanently, so it is a decision that requires a long-time commitment I make a dedicated effort to do things that will protect and build bone strength. I try to eat the right things, exercise, watch my weight so no extra stress is put on my bones, and try to be mindful of what I am doing and take precautions not to fall, lift items that are heavy, etc. etc.

I was on Fosamax for almost a year. It was causing heartburn and my endocrinologist didn’t want me to take it anymore. On Monday I had a Reclast infusion. It went well and so far no side effects, other than some tiredness, which could be caused from something else., like lack of sleep.
