Dealing with Sciatica pain

Posted by junebug15 @junebug15, May 1, 2017

Am dealing with pain on my left side radiating down my leg with numbness and tingling, diagnosed as sciatica. MRI showed two bulging discs and spinal stenosis. Ironically, I question whether the sciatica is from the above, but may involve my piriformis muscle. I had this problem in 2009 and my neurologist injected a steroid into the prirformis and I had relief for all of this time. After taking steroids with no relief I asked for a shot in the piriformis (rather than an epidural) and this has helped a little. Am due for another shot soon. I am now also having severe muscle cramping in my groin and thigh upon standing and walking, which is very painful. Would appreciate anyone's input. I am going to look into PT and ART (active release technique). Thanks for your input.

Does anyone else have debilitating "sciatica" - can only walk 15 min at a time rest of time in bed? Pain from lower right back, through right hamstring, outside of both calves and burning, knife-life pain in the bottom of both feet. I have progressed to this point over a 10 year period. Tried cortisone injections, accupuncture, dry needling, physical therapy, myofascial massage, TENS, chiropractor and now looking for supplements.

Yes. Saw several podiatrists and not plantar fasciitis but I still have custom orthotics. Hasn’t helped.

Hi @bustrbrwn22, You will notice we merged your post into the Sciatica pain discussion where you had previously posted so that members who have been following your discussion will be able to respond and share any experience or knowledge they have for your question. Here's what I found on Kadian...

Kadian Oral (Generic name: Morphine) ..."This medication is used to help relieve severe ongoing pain (such as due to cancer). Morphine belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain." Kadian Oral : Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Pictures: https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-1509/kadian-oral/details

Has Kadian (morphine) been prescribed or suggested to treat your pain from Sciatica?

Yes but I believe in an oral dosage. Thanks so much for helping me.

Would Kadian be stronger than the hydrocodone I am currently taking?

@bustrbrwn22 That is a question you need to discuss with your doctor or a pharmacist. From what I have read they are similar but it may boil down to the dosage. Here's an article that discusses Hydrocodone and Morphine.

Hydrocodone and Morphine Possess Similar Rewarding Effects and Reduce ERK and CREB Phosphorylation in the Nucleus Accumbens: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3418391/

@ladytakash I/m not a doctor, but it sounds like you need fusion surgery, I had a fusion and stenosis surgery on June 9th. I now have no sciatic pain and hardly any other pain. Walking 1/4 Mile 2 times a day, so makes 1/2mile. I still do get tired if I do too much, I went to Mayo at Rochester, MN. Had an excellent surgeon. Sorry for your pain.

I completely understand your caution when it comes to anything entering near your spinal cord and you cannot be faulted for trying everything else before you try an epidural if that is what makes you the most uncomfortable.

In regards to ART, I would like to invite @predictable to the conversation as he has done some research on this type of therapy and discussed it on Connect in the past.

Hi. Just joining this group. My former pain doctor was a retired orthopedic surgeon and he advised me not to have surgery on my back unless it was absolutely necessary. I am starting to go to the gym today and wonder what exercises might help sciatica. I am a 79 year old woman only about 8 lb. overweight which I hope to lose soon.

Yes, surgery should be the last option. If you can find a good yoga teacher , there are specific postures called asanas to relieve back pain and sciatica.

Thank you.. I do have Classical Stretch videos but haven't made time to do the exercises. (Very sick husband)
