Multifocal Adenocarcinoma of the lung, continual recurrences

We have multifocal adenocarcinoma of the lung. @linda10 and @sakota.- Please join me in this discussion.

For a short explanation of this tongue twister. Briefly, Multifocal Adenocarcinoma (MAC) of the lung is a clinical entity of multiple synchronous (less than 6 months) or metachronous (more than 6 months), often ground-glass opacities (GGO) on CT scan, typically indolent-behaving cancers. There is a scarce amt of clinical data to guide treatment decisions.

This means that more than one potential cancerous lesion, mostly ground glass, shows up at a time. For instance I had 3 cancerous lesions 10 years ago in my left lung and in the same area. They were all different sizes. They grow at different rates.

Multifocal adenocarcinoma is a very complex cancer because the medical profession doesn't know if the ground glass lesions are the primary cancer or small metastases of another primary cancer. They don't even know where they start..

Multifocal Adenocarcinoma has sub types and it's management is based on whether it's indolent or very virulent.

These are very simplistic explanations. Even doctors are confused by it and it's only been within the last twenty years that they have separated it from a Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma (BAC).

The constant recurrences are the buggers. Not only do we have to constantly face lots of CT scans but when lung cells change, which they often do, we are in terror of another virulent cancer. I presently have several ground glass lesions. And I have had many that have disappeared. It's enough to drive you nuts and PTSD is exacerbated by the frequency of these devils.

Hello to all! I got my 1st COVID shot last week. 2nd will be on the 22nd. I have a Mayo appointment next week on the 13th. I just passed my 10 year cancerversary last month. Lots going on. Hopefully my visit will yield nothing growing. I just wish the spots would stop appearing and I could graduate to 6 month checkups. Hopefully you are all doing well and the Spring weather will lift everyone’s spirits💕

@merry I was just sore at the injection site for 1 day. Hopefully I will have no issues with the 2nd shot. They’ve been following me every 3 months because they continue to find new ggos to follow. I had radiation ☢️ in October for an area that was growing. In January they found a new very small ggo. I’m cautiously optimistic as always. One day at a time. So far I’ve outlived a lot of people with no cancer. I always try and be grateful every day. No one is promised tomorrow.

@merry I was just sore at the injection site for 1 day. Hopefully I will have no issues with the 2nd shot. They’ve been following me every 3 months because they continue to find new ggos to follow. @merry a bit late but my update is everything ok except a 2mm enlargement in a previously stable ggo. Back to the Mayo in July. As we know growth is never good with us, so we’ll see what July brings. Hope all is well with everyone.

Hi I am sakota. I was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011. I had gone to mayo just for a general checkup which included a general chest X-ray and from there it went to more tests and surgery. I was diagnosed with multifocal adenocarcinoma I really didn’t feel anything and just knew that I wanted this cancer out of me. So I had surgery and they removed a wedge out of my lower right lung. They were able to do it my scope so only in the hospital a cople of days. From then it’s been ct scans every 3 to 6 months one more surgery and two times for radiation treatment. It’s annoying not being cancer free and the worry you have a ct scan. I had a ct yesterday and report today that was stable yet. But for all long who knows. If it wouldn’t be for my having copd I would feel a it better. Thanks for reading my story

Hi everyone. I’m back. Still dealing with my lung cancer and it has returned and i guess radiation again. Still have my copd. Use inhalers and oxygen. I dont have much energy and my daughters have been a blessing and fun with my three greatgrands.

Now fo the next chapter. I now have a large hiatal hernia which seems to be growing and is causing internal bleeding which puts me in the hospital a couple of times now. So i go in for the scope down my throat again to see how much its changed. Then the decision will be do i have surgery which is a risk. Or keep going into the hosp when i start bleeding again. I am so scared if i have surgery. Anyone have surgery with copd and lung cancer.

Ok thats my chapters for now. Oh yes i am moving in assisted living next month. I hope that all of you are doing ok and my prayers are with. Just remember the good Lord is walking right beside you.

@sakota- Joan, good morning and it is so good to hear from you again! I'm so glad to hear that your daughters have been helping you and that you are having fun with your great-grandbabies. What fun!

I'm disheartened that your cancer is back. We know this well-traveled road very well, don't we? I have had surgery several times and one was to repair a collapsed artery that was nicked during one of my surgeries.

I'm wondering how many times you can go to the ER for bleeding? Some of your fatigue might be caused by blood loss, although it is a guess on my part. I know that thinking about surgery is scary and planning to have it is another thing altogether, however it might help get you feeling better with more energy. Give it a serious thought. What have your doctors said about you having surgery?
