Severe rocking, shaking and tremors inside & out

Posted by gosssamer702 @gosssamer702, Apr 17, 2021

Hello everyone my name is Mary and I live in Saint Joseph Missouri. Just over two years ago I experienced a very traumatic injury which affected my spine, causing several bulging disc’s and one vertebrae that is pushed inward. additionally my hip on the right side shifted up. I am experiencing extreme chronic pain since then that’s basically affected me from the base of my skull to my feet. I have seen four neurosurgeons, two neurologists, an internal medicine specialist and a battery of various other medical types. To date, nothing. No one has an answer. The neurologist says I should see the neurosurgeon while the neurosurgeon says I should see the neurologist. I experience really bad shaking when I get out of bed accompanied by temporary stuttering that goes away after a few minutes. When I sit down, I experience horrible pain in my sacrum area along with a swaying/rocking motion as I sit in a chair. Has anyone experienced anything like this that they could share with me and the group? Any input is greatly appreciated.

@gosssamer702-Hi. I empathize with you and your pain. It sounds like you have been diligent in your search for answers with many providers/specialists.
You mentioned a couple of things;
•This was a traumatic injury. I am curious if you have worked with body therapists, to address the musculature tension & emotional tension that has occurred in your body?
•With chronic pain, overtime this affects the nervous system, which keeps everything on high alert, which can cause bracing, shaking and rigidity. Have you worked with someone to address your sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system? For example a cranial/sacral therapy, myofascial release therapy?
•While I’m not sure what the traumatic event was that caused your injury, that in itself can cause a stress response that stays in the body. All of these things can create a lot of tension. Leading to more chronic pain.
I hope the additional thoughts/input help.

Thank you so much for your quick and kind response. My injury occurred working part time as a receiving clerk at JoAnn Fabrics. Please note that I am 4’9” and weigh 90 lbs. I was instructed to move several large heavy boxes. The first attempt caused a “pop” noise in my lower back, hip and knee. The workers comp doctor reported that this was preexisting condition and I was denied any benefits. 🙄 Being part time, I had no health insurance and could not afford to buy the Affordable Care Act insurance. Initially, no one would see me due to no insurance. I did try many other alternative therapies but none of them really helped much. This past January, I was finally able to get health insurance although nearly two years had past since the injury. I am scheduled to see a highly rated Orthopedic Spine Specialist in three weeks to see what he thinks and recommends.

Take your images and go to a Physical Therapist. Mine was a manual, Osteopathic trained, sole proprietor. Not a big room of specialists. She solved my bursitis/piriformis/sciatica issues, for the most part. I have stretches to do. This type of therapist will take you from where you are and, my back is not pretty, either. Ice/heat/epsom salt bath, walking in a pool helps, too. I have MCTD and many of us are also hypermobile, so when muscles get weaker, joints do not stay put. Most stretches were yoga/pilates/isometric based so could be done on bed or table.

Hello @gosssamer702 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Your injury and your last two years sound extremely challenging but it does sound like you have been doing what you can despite insurance issues to boot.

That said, I see that @nrd1 and @marye2 have come to the discussion to provide some ideas given their experiences.

How can members best support you going into your Orthopedic Spine Specialist appointment in a few weeks?

I need prayers and positive thoughts as I struggle with severe shaking and pain and 6 days of no sleep from this. 3 weeks seems to far off as I deteriorate.

@gosssamer702 I am very sorry to hear of your worsening symptoms and continued lack of sleep. Have you considered going to the Emergency Department at your local hospital?

@gosssamer702 have all nine times been as a result of your pain and/or shaking? What have the ER doctors told you they believe your symptoms are from and what have they recommended for follow up care?

Yes for pain and shaking. I have severe spine injury. They all said no idea what it is and see neurologist. Neurologists are baffled and see neurosurgeon. Neurosurgeon said can’t help so see neurologist....,
One hospital visit they said I needed mental ward admission when clearly my spine messed up causing pain. I can barely walk and on walker waiting to see orthopedic spine surgeon.
