Posted by Tracey001 @tracey001, Aug 18, 2011

I just found out that i have Macular Degeneration possibly Macular Dystorphy and I am scared to death. I haven't eaten in three days and I feel a huge sence of hoplessness. I would really like to talk to others who have it and how they are coping

Hello. I have macular degeneration also. You didn't write how far along it is or how severely your vision has been changed. There are things you can do to slow the progression. My doctor told me to take fish oil or increase my intake of fish consumption. Eyes love omega threes. Eat more leafy green veggies. AREDS eye vitamins are evidence based to help slow down the process. Protect your eyes from the sun. Wear sunglasses whenever you go out, even if it is cloudy. Avoid blue light as much as you can. LED lightbulbs are hurtful. Look at the testing grid every morning to see if the lines are bending or curving. If you see changes, notify your MD right away. Everyone is different, but these things have helped to slow mine down. I was disagnosed in 2011 and have had no further progression. Be sure that you have a skilled MD and regular eye exams. Empower yourself with a treatment plan worked out with a medical professional. Doing things to support your vision will help decrease your anxiety, it has helped me. I never smoked and am not a diabetic, and have never had high blood pressure, these can impact your eyes. Best wishes.

Hello, don't despair, there is hope out there! My husband was diagnosed last year by his ophthalmologist and immediate referred to a specialist in this field. He has been taking shots monthly and he has stabilized with a small improvement. Doctor says he was amazed at the results. I don't know much more about it but there are many people with this condition and have been doing well. Eat well and take good care of your health. This is a great support group and I wish you the very best and we'll be checking in to see how you are doing.

Also my husband takes the AREDS 2 vitamins which are a great deal of help. AARP and the manufacturer offers good coupons.

I was diagnosed 15 years ago. I am doing great. The doctors see the drusens , not sure of spelling, but I do not notice any difference in my vision . I have seen 3 different Doctors they all advised me to take fish oil and Preservision Areds 2. I never miss taking it daily. The fish oil is 1200mg and I take 3 a day. I am hoping I do not become blind. I am 75 years old and doing great. Wish you the best
