Severe Back, Groin, Hip pain

Posted by Eric @eric1, Jul 11, 2011

A couple of years ago my otherwise healthy mother woke up one morning with severe groin, hip, back and groin pain. She has shooting pains that make it nearly impossible for her to get around. She's had a back operation, a hip replacement, physical therapy and other treatments. The current thinking is that she may have arthritis in her spine.

Does anyone have suggestions? Her (many) doctors are not coordinated but they are engaged and running low on ideas.

Tks,
Eric

Has she had both hips replaced? Sure sounds like the hip joint.

One hip replaced. She does need the other one done as well but the pain is (mostly) on the side of the one that was already replaced. They did a bone scan to make sure the replaced hip is in there tightly too.

I hate bone scans alone with no x-ray.I have one hip that has really hurt since replacement and everything looks ok,but something is causing the pain.I have lower back and hip, groin pain also. That is the way my hip problems came about.I woke up one morning and couldnt put any weight on them.If shes up to it and needs it the other hip being replaced could help she could compensate for the pain a little better if she had a good replacement to transfer weight.Thats not much help but this is so difficult to go through because you never have a sure solution.

Hi Eric - My mother went in for a hip replacement and ended up in total agony. No-one could understand what was happening and the other patients were coming and going and Mum was getting nowhere. It turned out that she had got Golden Staph along with the new hip hence all the pain, agony and not being able to walk without her walker. I'm not saying that is what your mother has but it's something to be considered. My mum's pain was very devilitating and was in her hips, groin and back - sounds very familiar.

Wishing your mum all the best and a speedy recovery.

They diagnosed it after they took the new hip out, cleaned it and put it back in and the symptoms where the same. They then had to remove that hip and put in another new one. It was very tedious and took a real toll on my mum's health as they could not remove the Golden Staph only treat it with antibiotics. They were not able to do the other hip or any other surgery as the Golden Staph would attack any foreign object in her body. It's not a very pleasant thing to end up with and Mum was in pain until she passed. I truly hope that this is not what is wrong with your Mum.

My husband recently had an entire skeletal system bone scan done with radioactive injection. He has been diagnosed with Paget's Disease - a rare bone disorder that usually only affects the elderly.
This has explained all the pain he has throughout his body. The scan was ordered by his radiologist because he saw an abnormality on a CT Scan. I have been told the bone scan and/or phosphate level blood checks can test for this painful disease.

Hi Eric - I would encourage you, if you can't find a solution that succesfully ameliorates her pain, to check out the Mayo Clinic Pain Rehabilitation Center. It's for people with any kind of chronic pain, and it sounds like your mother has been dealing with a good deal of that for years. Best of luck!

I have a discussion about it here: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fconnect.mayoclinic.org%2Fdiscussions%2F106-pain-rehabilitation-clinic&h=jAQD31lLy

You can find a direct link to program info here: http://www.mayoclinic.org/pain-rehabilitation-center-rst/patients.html

I am myself a PRC Alumnus, and would be happy to answer any questions you might have about it. Best Wishes!
