I'd like to start a discussion on fructose malabsorption, how to control it, what to eat and not eat, etc. . Is anybody interested?

Hello, I am the mom of a 13 yr old boy with fructose malabsorption. He was finally diagnosed at Mayo 1st week of June 2018. He finally became pain free once we eliminated fructans, although I did not realize there are fructans in potato skins! Regarding L-alanine, how much do you take per body weight? do you need to take it on an empty stomach before you eat food? We have had no help in re-introducing foods. Dieticians repeatedy tell us "everyone is different, you just have to try." When my son has even 3 bites of a food, he reacts 6 hrs later and is laid up with abdominal pain, weakness and severe constipation for 5-6 days. As a mom, it is very sad to see my son curled up for so long and he is missing school. Do you have any suggestions on how to choose foods to re-introduce and how to decrease the likelihood of a reaction? Thank you!!

Yes, I also have Fructose Intolerances. I can’t get any sugars at all. peas, carrots, onions, garlic, fruits, table sugars
honey, diet pop, gum etc. It a horrible diet.

I am very interested. I am 60 never had a stomach issue my entire life. Cast iron stomach. Year ago my stomach started feeling weird like nauseous all the time had migraines too. Checked the migraines but was thankfully nothing. Told me I had high blood pressure, which was new to me too. Took meds to control the blood pressure. Decided to check out my stomach issues. Endoscopy showed reflux. Started reflux diet. Still felt nauseous. Took ultra sound all ok. Then took breathing tests. Shower bacterial overgrowth, fructose malabsorption and lactaid intolerance. Never had an issue with anything stomach my entire life. Now everything! Seeing a nutritionist. Feel best when I don’t eat!!!!! Have eliminated everything. Would love to hear what works for you and others. Are there glucose pills we can take? Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes very interested. I would also appreciate a list of names companies of vitamins example calcium, multi vitamins, probiotics, .... that work well with fructose malabsorption. Thank you

I also have fructose malabsorption also cannot have any sugars or fruits but didn't realize that cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, and anything with seeds are also fruit. Cheated over the hoildays and paid the price for several months!

I have been an IBS sufferer for many years and over the last 3 to 4 years had become worse. That's when I found out about LOW FODMAP diet. Having adopted it, am much much better over the last 2 years. Fructose intolerance could be associated with other intolerances like Lactose and Sorbitol. Hope you got these tested and eliminated. Fructose is found in many fruits -- Mangoes are the worst; jack fruit, very ripe bananas are others. I use an ANDROID app called "FODMAP" from Monash Univ, Australia -- who pioneered this diet. They have tested a large number of food sources and provide details of lactose, fructose, sorbitol content in different food items. You might find this useful to find the low FRUCTOSE foods.

Sounds great if you can eat some fructose! Unfortunately the low FODMAP diet has too much for me. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, I can't eat any fruit including cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, ect which are also fruits!! There are many foods on the FODMAP diet I can't tolerate

As mentioned in many clinical articles on IBS -- there is high variability on individual tolerances for specific foods. Hence the advise on necessity to find out our own tolerance levels for many of those in the grey zone. I find that I do not tolerate most of those marked RED in the FODMAP app -- which means my problem is similar to many others. I tolerate Tomatoes and carrots well - even in large quantities -- but raw Cucumber and green pepper in small quantities only. The FODMAP app indicates the average levels with tolerable quantities suggested based on their testing. Green pepper is suggested in small quantities only. Yellow and Red varieties are better tolerated than the popular green. All the best in your quest to quieten you guts !!

Yes, love it here but as someone who studies nutrition am somewhat shocked at what they eat!
