MAC and getting the COVID vaccine

Posted by cmi @cmi, Jan 6, 2021

This is a wonderful team...like a real cooperativa family...we are a band of patients that strategize together...amazing. All good dialogue for “rits”...I also believe the CAT scan would be a good step...it arms the doctor with evidence.

I have another question for the group...what are the feelings on “us” being candidates for the Covid vaccine? Has anyone yet vaccinated? I see my ID doc this afternoon...it is one of my concerns. Any feedback appreciated.

I’ve asked my allergy Dr. because I’m anaphylactic to bee stings and shrimp and was told to read up on the different Covid vaccines and make my decision after doing so. It didn’t sound like to me he wanted to be responsible.

I am sorry that your doctor wasn't more helpful. Was this your primary care doc? I have allergies to multiple meds, but I was so happy to receive Dose#1 of the COVID vaccine without side effects. I am 76 years old and believe that we owe it to each other to be vaccinated unless there is a medical contraindication

I got my 2nd dose of Pfizer vaccine this week. I had a sore arm and had mild aches and pains and a headache all the next day. Not too bad and so glad to have it.

Rosalyn, did you have the same or similar reaction to the first dose? I

My daughter & I both reacted to the first dose with headache, backache, fever and nausea, but my husband just had a sore arm. My daughter's reaction to the second was quite pronounced - flu-like symptoms and fever for 2 days - of course, she had Covid back in March, so probably was mounting a BIG immune response to the vaccine. My other daughter got the Moderna vaccine, and she got "Covid Arm" - swollen bicep and lymph glands, fever and nausea - a week after the first dose - also sign of a proper immune response, felt by a fair number (but by no means the majority) of injectees.
We are all different - your results may vary.

Hi Sue! I also experienced Covid Arm. I was told to get my second vaccine in my other arm. Also it was suggested to take an anti inflammatory before the jab. It really wasn’t that bad- just an annoying itch. Your daughter and I are in the minority. I’m still being extra careful, but don’t you feel relief and less fear which is so important to our immune system?

Tina - Warn him in advance that you will be doing this, but try pleading your case as his "caregiver." Here in MN, they are very conscious of using up every vial they thaw so there is no waste, and working hard to get 6 doses from each vial (which leads to a 20% increase in the number of shots that can be given.) This weekend, our largest medical center ended up with 800 soon to expire doses, and quickly opened a clinic to all over 65 to sign up & get injected on Saturday.
Everyone on a wait list should be alert to these announcements, often made on email or social media.

Sue, where was it announced that there were 800 doses soon to expire that could have been given to 65+? Was that in Rochester? I live 5 minutes from Mayo and am so anxious to get the vaccine due to my bronchiectasis. If there is a way to get on a last call list, I would be so grateful to be let in on the secret password 🙂 I am getting nowhere with my primary care doc or my pulmonologist.

No. I only had a very sore arm on the first dose.

That was last week in Minneapolis. Hennepin Health had them, and was able to administer all of them to eligible people registered in their system without any waste by last Saturday. According to my daughter, an RN on their Covid & telehealth lines, they are being much more cautious about how much they thaw each day now, matching it carefully to scheduled appointments.

Ditto for me! Grateful for others, but there is a brick wall where I live, thus far and the state “lottery” system of covid vaccinations hasn’t brought me any luck (even though it would be a 6 or 8 hour round trip) to get one of the coveted appointments.
