Skin Cancer by Ear Lobe

Posted by suzanne2 @suzanne2, Dec 13, 2020

My husband has just been told a spot near his ear lobe is cancerous. They are going to remove it in office and look at what they are removing as they do it. They said they will remove in the area until they get 100% clear biopsy. Has anyone ever had such a removal? If so is this an effective way and best way of handling this type of cancer?

@suzanne2 Hello and welcome back to Connect! I’m sure that you are very worried about the cancerous spot on your husband’s ear. Especially since it’s by the face. Doing a simple in-office procedure is very routine and safe. My father had many of these done. It doesn’t look great at first because of the scabbing, but it clears up. The doctors can evaluate the incision site to make sure they get ‘clean margins.’
Will you come back and tell us how it went?

@becsbuddy Thanks for the reply. I guess when I hear the c word I tend to think the worse. My grandma, uncle and mom passed from pancreatic cancer and my uncle colon, also had an aunt on my dad's side pass from breast cancer. I definitely will check back with an update. His appointment is the 11 of January.

This procedure is called Moh's surgery. I have had it done several times on my face, (nose twice) and legs. It is an uncomfortable process, but very safe.
It also leaves a noticeable scar, which I thought to be the worst effect of this type of surgery, as mine were very deep! My scars are still bad after several years.
Skin cancer, unless it is a Melanoma, is probably not something to worry that much about as it is easily removed. That sounds a bit harsh, but believe me, as someone who gets one either cut off or burned off twice a year, is a minor procedure. So please don't worry.

mermaid7272, there is a form of vitamin E called Deta Tocotrienol that may help with your frequent skin cancers. Alway consult with your health care professional before useing any supplement.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been told that my skin cancers are the result of years in the sun when I was a teenager. The dangers of the sun were not realized back then. I also have had many other much more serious cancers, some quite rare, but have managed to survive. These were probably due to an errant gene!

My 95 year old partner had a spot behind his ear lobe. He should have had it looked at much earlier. First they did a biopsy in skin doctor's office. It came back cancer. He then had to go to a surgeon who had to dig down twice to remove it until there showed no more sign of the cancerous cells. It was done with shots to deaden the area. It was somewhat painful..but done rather quickly. It was then packed and bandage left on for several weeks. After that he had to keep it lubricated. It has healed fine. Now he has to go back and have his body checked for any more signs as it was the agressive cancer.

@suzanne2, checking in and wondering how things went with your husband's biopsy and follow-up treatment, if any. Any updates to share?

@colleenyoung They removed the total affected area. It is by his ear lobe so an awkward place to bandage. He had about 5 stitches and there is very little noticeable scarring. They said they got it all and I guess time will tell. He has to go back in 6 months for a recheck.
