I've stopped taking my blood pressure

Posted by ashby1947 @ashby1947, Aug 30, 2020

In June, my BP was over 200 a couple of times, which sent me to the ED. In addition to Carvedilol TID, HCTZ 12.5, Telmisartin 40 BID, and Diltiazim 180, I was started on a Clonidine patch. I went through every possible renal test, 24 hr BP monitoring, etc. Everything was negative, no problems. My cardiologist said, "All your testing is normal. I don't have a good reason for why your BP fluctuates and requires so much medication. Hope you are okay." The end of July at my PCP doc, seeing the PA, my BP was 182 upon first check, and then 195 when I left. She said, "Keep an eye on your blood pressure." SInce that time, I have taken my BP a few times, with a high of 165, often 140ish, diastolic is okay. I have stopped taking it. There is nothing else "they" are going to do, apparently; although, I will see my cardiologist in October. I can tell when the BP is ultra high, and can dose myself with Clonidine tablets if necessary. So far, that has not been a problem. Taking my BP is stressful and annoying, and since there is nothing to do about it, I have chosen not to put myself through it. (I did just take it now, just to honest with you and myself - 12 noon - and it was 148/80.) So perhaps this is my "normal". I know that I have always felt that it had to be 120/80, and that somehow I had failed if it wasn't. A delusion I no longer harbor. I have studied, read and understand a great deal about BP, heart issues, and also myself. I am not avoiding anything, I just feel like I don't need the stress. Any thoughts, comments, or experiences? I am wishing you all well and healthy blood pressure - whatever that it for you! Sue

I have taken my blood pressure every day for approximately 2 years. When I go to the doctor it is almost always 20 to 30 points higher both systolic and diastolic. I have two cuff type blood pressure measuring devices at home which give the same reading and I have carried one of them into the doctor's office to verify they are consistent with the doctor's device and they are. I have asked the doctors if they prescribe medication based on the pressure measurement made when patients come into their office. They say no they want the patient to make measurements at home over a period of time. Which I think is certainly a good idea based on my experience. I have been diagnosed with heart failure so I began taking Lisinopril 5 mg a few months ago. Before taking Lisinopril my average pressure at home was 123/81. Since starting the medication it has dropped to 108/73.

I had the same problem with high BP as you. I was taking my BP too many times a day, and at night it would be high as yours, and I ended up going to the ER as the readings were at 200/100. A couple times at the ER they had just observed, and after several hours, the BP would go down on its own. I had used clonodine, and at first it worked, but it lost its effectiveness after a couple months. I finally went to a cardiologist. The cardiologist insisted I take my BP only 1 time a day, 2 hours after my morning BP pills, Carvedilol and HCT. At night I use Cavedilol and Lisinopril. I had been using Clonodine, but the cardiologist had me discontinue immediately, as that med can cause issues (There are high readings if you have taken it too long, and you may get withdrawal high BP). Now my AM BP is in the 115/67 range, and I have sneaked in a BP reading a couple times in PM, and it was 128/70. Anxiety in my case, I believe, was the main instigator of high BP, and yes, when I go to the doctor BP still goes up to 150/85 range. The key for me was to stop taking the BP measurements too often, and my cardiologist concurs.

Like many of you, I have found my BP is higher in the Doctor's office. Systolic in particular is 20-30 points higher. Did take my monitor in to validate that it is accurate at the Doctor's office. So I think just the thought of having the measurement in the Dr.'s office causes an increase. So I monitor at home and take those measurements to the Doctor and he reviews them.

I have the same reaction to taking my pressure at home. I do go to doctors offices often for one thing or another so I rely on that reading now. Just too stressful to take it all the time

Well, my blood pressure is and has been low....kept a journal for awhile now and the lowest to date was 91/75. Then and doctors I was seeing during those times, didn’t feel it was a problem beverage in their office it would run normal and at times 98/74. The only person who told me to be careful was the MA who took my blood pressure and said low blood pressure can also be a problem. That’s when I bought the same blood pressure machine they use in the doctors office, plus my sister is an and she showed me how to use the old fashion blood pressure with the bulb you squeeze. Well I also learned about the table tilt test that you can perform yourself at home. Example of just one of many was. Sitting down, blood pressure was 118/83, waited about 1 to 3 minutes and took blood pressure test, standing and it was 100/83, another example sitting it was 104/72. Waited few minutes took again standing and it was 91/75. There has been a few times it went up some at a doctors office and sitting and waiting for hours, drank 2 cups of coffee and an add real and it was 135//88. I told her that she didn’t do it right and to retake it, as expected it said 122/81. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, ulnar nerve damage, severe depression and get dizzy upon standing but none of the doctors felt it was a problem and some appeared annoyed that I knew how to do do the table tilt test. I know my Adrenals have crashed and other things. DHEA levels low for years and cortisol levels high in the morning etc. so, after bouncing from one doctor to another for years, still no help. Holistic doctor agreed with me and requested I ask my doctors for certain blood work so he could rule out some things. They refused but did get them to agree to check my DHEA and vitamin d levels, yep...low as ever. I now am past fight or flight mode, but survival mode and giving it to God because I can’t deal with doctors and being unheard and their egos hurt because I knew more then they did. Plus, my fuse is very short now days, and I am not in the mood for games. I will go off and therefore, pray and try my hardest to keep my anger etc, pain etc in check. God bless everyone and if and when this stupid virus is over, then I will wait for directions from God, if I am still around.

Just a suggestion. When BP is high, take a few minutes and do 5 - 6 deep breathing exercises. In slow and deep, hold a second, out slowly. Hold a second, in...while thinking of positive things, Take BP again while still breathing-deeply. Mine comes way down doing that.

Hi, here is a suggestion, try and find out what is making your Blood pressure go up. I have a similar situation my goes really high at times and than goes really low. Doctors don't want to take the time to figure it out. So I started to do my own research to figure it out. What I did find out your body could be low on all kinds of stuff, like magnesium if your low this can cause blood pressure to go up also can cause other problem. I am not a doctor. I am a person searching for answers like you. You might want to do some research. This is what I did I wrote down all my symptoms than I started doing research to find out what might be causing my blood pressure to go up. One thing I found is I might be low of magnesium m symptoms matched that but still doing more research on other stuff. I will take all the information to my heart doctor and see what he said. He is pretty cool, he is open to new ideas. I see him today, hope I get some answers. Good luck on solving your issues.

Nice suggestions, @gizmo1500. Hope your physician can help you find some answers. Please let us know what he comes back and says and if your blood work indicates any of the suggested reasoning behind the high blood pressure.
