Flu shots: Did you get it through your transplant team?

Posted by gphetteplace @gphetteplace, Aug 29, 2020

Phoenix Mayo patients - It’s that time of year. Do you get your flu shot through your transplant team? If so, do I reach out to them? I’m not scheduled to see them again until my 1 year follow up next March.

Hi @gphetteplace!
Good question. I get my flu shots at my local CVS. Just had my influenza - for those of us over 65 -, my pneumonia shot and my shingles in one day!
My arms were a bit sore for a few days, but did not stop me from eing active. I always send the info from CVS to Mayo to update my vaccination file. I am 3 1/2 years out from my heart transplant! Wishing you the best! Ellen

@gphetteplace, This is a great question and it is perfect time to bring this to all of out attention. You have reminded me to call my local pharmacy to see if they have the Senior dose available. Tomorrow ✔
Mayo Transplant Center in Rochester used to have a voice message when you made a phone call that reminds patients and family members to get their flu shot. I haven't called recently, though. And I don't want a call now and activate the 24 Hr emergency number.

My husband and I got out flu shot on Thursday. I called ahead to be sure that that had the senior over 65 dose. After we had our shots, they had 2 doses remaining until they get their next shipment which they will get next week. This is a small pharmacy, and that might not be an issue for the bigger chains, but I would encourage you to call before you go and ask about the supply.

I also called ahead, i got mine Thursday at a Safeway Grocery store Pharmacy. Mainly since they also gave a 10% off coupon for a grocery purchase. Most of my meds come from mail order now. I don't. Know what dosebIt was they know my age and that im a Heart transplant but that question didn't come up. Is it normal to get a larger dose when your over 65? I'm not quite there yet.

@rosemary I called our not-so-local Wal-Mart, where I got my flu shot last year. Since I start treatment for the multiple myeloma in 2 weeks, I want to get it soon. My husband will get his at the same time. The pharmacist said starting next week they will set up a tent outside and handle the flu shots there.

It is an automatic change, I think, when you turn 65. You should have filled in a form before your shot where you listed your birthdate and medical conditions allergies. That should have been checked before vaccine was administered.
