Flu shots: Did you get it through your transplant team?

Posted by gphetteplace @gphetteplace, Aug 29, 2020

Phoenix Mayo patients - It’s that time of year. Do you get your flu shot through your transplant team? If so, do I reach out to them? I’m not scheduled to see them again until my 1 year follow up next March.

@rosemarya

My husband and I got out flu shot on Thursday. I called ahead to be sure that that had the senior over 65 dose. After we had our shots, they had 2 doses remaining until they get their next shipment which they will get next week. This is a small pharmacy, and that might not be an issue for the bigger chains, but I would encourage you to call before you go and ask about the supply.

@rosemarya Are they advising us to get it this early? I was thinking of putting it off until next month since they say it only lasts about 6 months. Since we are doing extreme isolation I figure there is almost no chance of getting the flu now whereas if things change we might be more apt to be isolating less in the late winter.

This is the time of year I always get it. You might want to talk to your doctor about the best time in your area.

Your flu shot is important-
Earlier on this discussion there were questions about Where? and When? to get your flu shot. But now here is more information that I just found in this recent Mayo Minute. Which flu vaccine will be best for you and for your family members?

@rosemarya I had mine recently. The department of infectious diseases at MGH recommended waiting until October since that's when the heavy flu season starts and the immunity only lasts about 6 months, so anyone who is getting one and hasn't yet really shouldn't wait much longer.
Of course, I don't know how my husband and I could get the flu, we are very heavily isolating.

I got a call from my local pharmacy this week. And so did my husband. The message was to tell us that they have a supply of influenza vaccine available and to encourage us to come in to get our annual flu shot. We both have already had ours, though.
I was impressed that they are being proactive this year about spreading the word about flu shots this year. ( don't recall getting a phone call in other years.

@gphetteplace, Did you decide where to go for your flu shot? What did your transplant team advise you to do?
