Elavil (Amitriptyline) Use

Posted by fotula @fotula, Aug 27, 2020

Does anyone know anything about Elavil - amitriptyline. I have been using 10mg once a day but, I read that it can cause dementia in the elderly. I know that anyone over age 60 can take up to 50 - 75 mg daily according to literature I read. Does anyone know about the safety profile medically?

Hello @fotula, I have no experience with Elavil but did find some information on Elavil (Amitriptyline) side effects.

What to know about the side effects of Elavil: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325799

I also found a reference specifically mentioning side effects for the elderly..."Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, constipation, difficulty urinating, and QT prolongation (see above). Dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion can increase the risk of falling." -- Elavil Oral : Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Pictures ... - WebMD: https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-1807/elavil-oral/details

Have you talked with your doctor or pharmacist about the potential side effects?

Hello @fotula,

I did take Elavil a few years for sleep issues as well as pain. I also took a very small dose as you are doing. The side-effects I noticed were the dry mouth, constipation, and fuzziness first thing in the morning, since I took the dose at bedtime. Since the newer meds for sleep and pain have become available. I have taken those instead. They do not have the same side effects which is much better.

How long have you been taking the 10 mg? Have you also been taking it at bedtime for sleep? Have you had any side-effects that particularly concern you? John's (@johnbishop) suggestion that you speak with your doctor or pharmacist is a good idea. Have you talked with a professional regarding your concerns?

Thank you so much for the information you have provided me. I only take 10 mg at night to take the edge off of anxiety issues. I didn't know about all the side effects on the heart. I really appreciate your reaching out to me.
