Stroke medication: Taking Eliquis to reduce risk of stroke

I am a 72 year old women who just recently had a heart ablation which was successful. Because of this my doctor feels I should be taking Eliquis since I probably still have afib. My problem is Eliquis makes me very tired and causes quite bad body aches for me. I think my risk of a stroke is 5%. My doctor still feels I should stay on Eliquis for a stroke. This is really the first major health issue I have ever had. I wanted to know if anyone has any advise they can give me. Thanks

I’m 77 and on it, too. I am doing ok, but was also intrigued that it might be beneficial if one gets the Corona virus.

@basslakebabe, can you provide a citation for the possibility that Eliquis might be beneficial against the coronavirus?

@elegantgem @cece55..i had a loop recorder put in at the end of January due to TIA. It started blerdng at thr incision site a few days after that. My cardiologist was nit available but teo other doctors in the practice sae me and told me to stop the Xetalto until I can see my own doctor. My cardiologist told me to go off until the bleeding stops. During that time I had my teeth cleaned. I stopped taking the med until almost 3 weeks later. Yes, it took that long for the incision to heal. I have leg and back pain too, but i suspect it was the statin i was taking also. My cardiologist is giving permission to stop statin to rule out that it is the cause the pain. I think as cece55 suggested , it would pay to ask your doctor if you could stop Eliquis for a few days. My son in law used to have afib and he was on Eliquis but he didn't have any side effects so I guess it affects people differently. I'm extremely sensitive to meds so it's difficult for me to get used to anything. Cece55 are you off blood thinner now or are you on a different one?

Thanks everyone for your response. I decided to do a lot more reading about strokes and your heart. I was just reading a book by Dr. Jay Cohn called Cardiovascular health. He stated some (he didn't say which) blood thinner actually help in repairing the artery walls in the heart. Have any of you heard that?

Thanks everyone for your response. I decided to do a lot more reading about strokes and your heart. I was just reading a book by Dr. Jay Cohn called Cardiovascular health. @elegantgem I haven't heard that but it does make some sense. I had a Heart Transplant and maybe that's why they want me on baby asprin is to help heal the different veins and arteries of mine that were sewn together. Interesting thought. I'll have to ask next time im in for a check-up.

@katydid77. I have tried many statins. Many years ago, Simvastatin was the first one, couldn't tolerate it, changed to prevastatin for a while eventually my GP let me go off it. Simvastatin has the most side effects. Now I tried pravastatin, still not good. Then my cardiologist put me on a new statin, even worse. The last statin was Crestor. Both my Neurologist and my GP's wife were on it, so i gave it a try, only 5 mg, the lowest dosage. My lipid test were great but pain still there. Finally my cardiologist is taking me off that too, so I'll wait a few weeks to see if that med is causing the pain. If not, he's going to put me back on prevastatin which he said has the least side effects. It's a waiting game. I'm getting pretty frustrated.
What dosage are you taking?

I would be interested to know if your pain has improved. I discontinued the Crestor about a week ago and cannot tell there is any improvement yet.

I would be interested to know if your pain has improved. I discontinued the Crestor about a week ago and cannot tell there is any improvement yet.

@katydid77. I stopped Crestor on August 15. Did ALL the pain go away? No. I have been having leg and hop pain and would like to rule out the fact that Crestor made it worse. My cardiologist agreed with the understanding that if my cholesterol spikes up, we will have to revisit statin again. Before statin, my cholesterol was under 200 to start and my HDL is over 60, LDL was 100,and Triglycerides was under 150, that's why my GP did not see the need to put me on statin. Crestor did reduced my cholesterol, no doubt about that even though it was only 5 mg. My concern with statin is that it could cause blood sugar to go up, the last thing i need is to be diabetic. Mind fog is also a common side effect. I'm very sensitive to medication, so that's why i am concerned. My annual physical is in November and I'll have another lipid test. Crossing my fingers and toes for good results.

Thanks for your update. I hope your check up goes well in november. I did not know statin could cause brain fog. I also am taking Metoprolol and was having a lot of trouble trying to put two thoughts together. How do you know when it is normal aging (I’m 81) and when it is caused by something tangible? I took a chance and reduced my dosage of Metoprolol by a half tablet and I knew within two days it had been the right decision. So many meds can contribute to confusion among other side effects. Keep us all posted on your progress.

I can tell you my pain bone/joint pain has not improved and I believe it has gotten slightly worse. I am going to try some supplements for bone and joints. I like Dr. Sears products. However, I also really relied on Fish oil tablets because I don't eat any fish. I know not taking Dr. Sears fish oil tablets is not helping me at all but my cardiologist told me not to take them.

I was diagnosed with fib in 2010 and was put on an adult aspirin once daily. Then in 2015' I had a cerebral brain hemmorage and diagnosed cerebral amyloid Angiopathy, and can no longer gave any blood thinners of any kind, leaving me in a really tight spot. Anybody else have both of these conditions?

If you are taking statins and are having muscle aches might I suggest taking CoQ10? This usually solves the problem. Make sure you are taking the readily adsorbable kind.
