Icy feet and ankles with Small Fiber Neuropathy....anyone?

Hello neuropathy friends. I am looking for information that talks about ice in your feet and ankles from Small Fiber Polyneuropathy. Recently, my feet feel like they have been hanging over the edge of a chair in a bucket of ice. No pain, unless you think freezing feet is painful. Just mysterious. I have had hot and painful but not cold and freezing. Toes still have the tingles and bottoms of feet are numb. Just can't get rid of the cold, cold, cold.

May you have peace and ease today.
Chris

@lioness i don’t blame you for not wanting to take a chance with the dangers of the virus. Sounds like positioning your body helps. I would research the risk for neuropathy with the surgery. For me, I always try to exhaust other avenues before surgery. Surgery should be my last option. I have known people left to deal with neuropathy as a result of hip replacements, knee replacements, and back surgeries. My neurosurgeon was the cause of my neuropathy after the 3rd and last surgical repair of my ruptured AVM. I never experienced neuropathy pain until that last surgery. Don’t get me wrong. I am grateful for all his efforts but I am the one still struggling with the pain. So be careful and research before making your decision.

Chris @artscaping, I've wondered if it might be that the small fiber neuropathy makes it hard to differentiate between cold or hot. I have had times when my feet were telling they were freezing even though I could touch my feet with my hands and they didn't feel cold...weird. I did find an article that mentions it.

Cold Feet That Aren’t Cold to the Touch May Indicate Neurologic Problem: https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/cold-feet-that-arent-cold-to-the-touch-may-indicate-neurologic-problem/

Hi @johnbishop, thanks for your wonderments about the ability to differentiate between cold or hot.

I do agree with the author that it is probably a neurologic problem. However, it appears that he says that if you get a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy sooner, it is more likely that it can be treated. Hmmmmm???????

@steeldove, thank you for your contribution. Do you have any idea why cold feet were more of an evident symptom than painful or numb feet? I have had this diagnosis for four years and I have never had cold feet. It just sort of crept in and stayed a few days ago.

May you have comfort and ease.

@artscaping Chris, I suspect it's just a matter of when those particular nerves are damaged enough to cause the sensation of cold feet. "Nerve damage, known as neuropathy, can also cause cold feet. In this case, the person senses a cold sensation because the nerves that detect temperature are not working correctly. The feet do not feel cold to the touch, although the person may feel numbness or a pins-and-needles sensation.Sep 16, 2019"

@lioness glad you have done research. I thought surgery because you had mentioned seeing a neurosurgeon. It won’t hurt to get another medical opinion. Do you get compression fractures often? Difficult to predict.

I have the same cold feet people here are talking about. Sometimes they actually are freezing cold but I think they are cold pretty much all the time - like a burning cold. In the winter the rest of my body like the room fairly cold so my feet get so cold I can't get to sleep unless I warm them up with a heating pad that I wrap around my feet. I have to be careful though not to burn my feet!

Me too. It can be 90° out and i will put socks on, especially to sleep. I always preferred socks most of my life for sleeping but I am pretty sure mine got much worse with pregnancy as i retained a ton of water and my legs and feet really swelled- i think it damaged my blood vessels, especially in left foot because it aches all the time. Add in the cold of winter and even socks and slippers and an extra rug under my chair for the cold floor does not help. I like those rice bags to get in the microwave to make it bearable.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Everyone should spend a few bucks for a microwavable (beans/rice) heat pack. Very valuable for all body parts and easier to form than a heating pad.

@avmcbellar Hi Just will go to see if he has any ideas outside of surgery not having surgery like you said it is a last resort . What I'm doing right now seems to be working for me so since I don't get out as much now because of the covid-19 I won't go to see a Dr. till this is over or at a better rate then it is now . Did you hear the task force about the virus today . Dr's still want the mask, social distancing and hand washing to still be the best thing we can do until a vaccine is available . About my fractures . The first was when I held a patient up so she wouldn't get hurt in bathtub. That was workers comp. My dexascan shows thinning of bones so next fracture from lifting also . Now I'm on natural meds to hopefully make my bones stronger so in a year I will have another dexascan . Sorry this is so long but I thought I'd better explain better

@artscaping The first symptom of SFN I experienced back in June 2016 was cold feet, and that's continued as a constant.

@steeldover, Hi there.....I had another episode of ice bricks for feet this morning and decided to review this discussion. You say that the cold feet have continued, at least through June 24. How are they now @steeldover? Do you now have cold hands also? Somehow, the messages from the damaged or less than active nerves are getting confused. I could barely stand the discomfort this morning and am better now. My therapist worked on my legs and feet today and they are better.

Please keep us informed of your ice pack feet and their journey. And especially, share ideas and "tricks" for faking them out of being frigid. We need all the help we can get. It is wonderful to know you are sharing with us.

May you be free and safe from harm.

Thanks, I'll get one of those packs. My last episode of icy feet was unbearable. Hope it does not get any worse. I put two heating pads around my feet, turned on the electric blanket, took pain pills and it still took two hours before I could fall asleep. Luckily I have only had about 4 of the icy feet so far in the last three weeks only.
