1 workout a day vs several a day benefits

Posted by fitnessask @fitnessask, Apr 6, 2020

Hi
i want to know if 1 exercise a day (e.g 1 rep pushups) instead of a full strength training has the same benefits as doing the same workout but including other exercises in the same setting. In other words is spreading the exercises through out the week has the same benefits as doing all workouts in 1 day.
Thanks.

@fitnessask- It sounds as if you want the best way to exercise that will make each muscle group the strongest- I'm guessing?
Here are some professional points of view:

https://www.topfitnessmag.com/train-1-body-part-per-day-full-body-workouts/

Also, it's not good to work the same muscles two days in a row. You need to leave room for mending. Are you new to exercising?

Actually once a day not once a week. I wanted to know if at any given time in a day if its beneficial to do an exercise or two like pushups or some weight lifting. I hope im not making this more confusing
Thanks

@fitnessask For your exercise why dont you join the walking program for one thing then do the weights every other day so the muscles have time to repair themselves . But stretching and walking is good for you . Help your body return to normal so you can sleep better . As we age our sleep patterns change and I dont know of anything to change that . Take it easy on the exercise and you,ll find this to be more beneficial .

Thank you all for your great replies! @merry no ma'am i want to to know if i can spread the workouts through out the day and get the same results as doing them in 1 settings in the same day.

For example If today i planned doing leg and chest. I would do leg exercises in the morning and chest exercises at noon.

@bookysue that sounds great! I do move around and try not to sit a lot.

@lioness yes ma'am i do try walking every day per the recommended weekly minutes. I hope your changing sleeping petterns are not upsetting you.

Thanks.

@fitnessask- Yes, the final answer is yes! My step-son did this and he put on a lot of muscle!
Here's a great site about it: https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a19539530/is-it-safe-to-work-out-twice-a-day/

Hi @fitnessask, I'd like to also welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I see you are looking to weigh the pros and cons of a full body workout versus a split routine workout, where you focus on one muscle group at a time... like Leg Day!

I would like to invite @contentandwell @ske22 @pfbacon @georger @goldenrascal @ayeshasharma and @aliali to this conversation. Between them they have a variety of fitness levels and experiences and may have some tips to offer.

I also found a blog and a website that does a nice job comparing the two types of routines.
https://truebody.fitness/full-body-workouts-or-split-routines/
https://centr.com/blog/show/7790/all-body-workout-vs-body-part-split

Are you currently working out? If so, what is your current routine? If not, what is your motivation to start working out? I always love to hear what inspires people to stay fit.

@fitnessask I think the links that @amandaburnett provided are excellent. Frankly, I never heard of "split workouts". I, under regular circumstances, go to my health club about 6 days a week, sometimes 7. I generally do the gym 3 of those days and do a full body workout. The links provided by Amanda seem to indicate that it is the preferred way, but there is a lot of personal preference there also. I find it easier to get it all done at once.
Is there a reason you prefer to split your workout? Is that so you can be more intense for each body area?

Hi jk thanks for the reply
I am asking about exercises not more workouts.

For example if today i have "leg day" workouts and it has total of 10 exercises I want to know if spreading these exercises throughout the day be as beneficial as doing them in 1 setting.

Sorry i am having trouble articulating my question.
In retrospect i probably need to change the title.
Thanks

@fitnessask-Oh, my goodness. I had no idea this is what you are asking. Let me ask you this? Do you have any pain so that you would need to do this? Do you not have time to complete 10 exercises? Why do you need 10 exercises for one part of your body?

Does not matter how you do it- along as you are doing- I spread them throughout the day and I feel for myself it’s more beneficial doing that way. I hate must do ex Er use and that’s helps not Thst way. I do leg and ankle leaning against to move my whole leg and feet back and forth and stretch up. I do so to speak push up against the small weight up and down bits.. putting ropes around and on door- help me do up and down pulling myself up- Walking my one hour with the goal of at least 4000 steps a day. ( usually ends being 8000 to 24,000 before the horror) . I learned some of due to Rehab when I did a bad fall and thought it was a cane and me for the rest of my life . I am walking better than expected and no cane. There are great stuff on internet for low impact chair to more extensive bits. It is essential to move all parts of your body as much you can. Weight bearing with one soup can on each hand-etc. take care all

Hi merry, its fine! thanks for the reply! That would be just an example in general. tho might work.

Hi bookysue thanks for the reply!
That is good to hear! I figured so even tho i read that there might not be enough muscle stimuli to encourage muscle growth if done that way. But perhaps not?

Thanks
