COVID-19 Coronavirus and Lung Health: What can you do?

Posted by Merry, Alumni Mentor @merpreb, Mar 1, 2020

Good morning- I have hesitated to post anything about this new and dangerous group of viruses because I am certainly not qualified to discuss any science. And certainly not about genetics and viruses. But I can discuss how we can lessen our fears, be as prepared as we can and very simply if we get it, what do we do?

First of all the COVID-19 is the name for many similar viruses. It's not just one. It is believed to have started by bat guana in Wuhan, China. Wuhan is the very large capital of Central China’s Hubei province. It is a commercial center divided by the Yangtze and Han rivers. This virus spread very quickly, perhaps like the flu. And because of travel. it is spreading throughout the world, and it is here in America. This is a group of very dangerous viruses has the potential to kill and has. Many of us with breathing problems must be very diligent to protect ourselves as much as we can.

You can help protect yourself by doing these things:

Keep your hands clean. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Cover your cough and sneezes to keep germs from spreading to others. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces routinely. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay home when you are sick.

If you have these symptoms please see a doctor: Fever, Cough, Shortness of breath

I know that a lot of us have at least two of these symptoms already. So if your shortness of breath or your coughs become worse and you feel ill then it is time to seek medical help.

Here are several sites that have addressed the Coronavirus for more information.

If you know of anyone who is ill please stay away from them. Passing along the facts about this group of viruses is the best that you can do to help others avoid getting ill.

Merry, Your updates are full of information.
Have you over looked several of the plagues?

@spudmato, I completely agree. @merpreb keeps an eye on updates about COVID, lung health, cancer and lung cancer from reliable, evidence-based sources, informing community members. The list of potential symptoms continues to grow: first anecdotally and often reported in popular and social media. Once data is gathered systemically by researchers, evaluated and proven, they are added to the list of evidence-based symptoms published by health authorities.

@contentandwell. I read that Chris Cuomo said he had chills so bad he chopped a tooth. His wife was taking chorox bath...1/2 cup of Chorox in her bath water, which I just cringed reading about it, she has used all kinds of unconventional methods like having billions of milligrams of vitamin drips by a doctor who made house calls, and some 'body charger' that sent electric currents through her body. Their children also are infected but I'm not following them.

Bleach and other household cleaners and disinfectants should NEVER be ingested, inhaled or on your body (bath or as a wash).

Q. Can I bath in bleach water?

A. Clorox® Regular Bleach2 is NOT recommended for personal hygiene of any kind–consumers should always avoid direct skin and eye contacts with both undiluted bleach, as well as prolonged contact with the various bleach solutions we recommend for household cleaning and laundry. Perhaps you are familiar with the instructions for using bleach for emergency treatment of drinking water. That’s an entirely different situation. For that, the bleach to water ratio is 1/8 teaspoon bleach per gallon of clear water, and the treated water has to stand for 30 minutes before drinking. During this time, the bleach kills any bacteria in the water before breaking down into salt and water. While this solution is safe to drink, using a bleach and water solution for bathing is not approved by the EPA and should not be done.

I agree with Colleen. Leave bleach for your white clothes or possible water and bleach on your counters. I think that's ok. But it's very dangerous to bath in it.

Good afternoon all. It's not just our lungs anymore where COVID-19 is striking.
I don't know about you but I am stunned with every new symptom and complication that shows up with this virus. It does seem as if these new symptoms make sense. If your brain is starved of oxygen than it might be expected that other organs and systems will be affected.
We already know that the heart can be affected. Lots of neurological symptoms are raising their ugly heads too.

Have any of you, who have had or have COVID-19 had any of these symptoms?

@merpreb Good presentation and it pretty much confirms what I have read previously from various sources.
One of the things I read about the neurological effects was that they feel it enters the nervous system, passing into it from nasal passages. That of course would mean a direct effect but I do not recall if that was theory or proven.

@contentandwell- I agree, this was very well done. Jane, I think that it's too early for there to be definites about what causes what with COVID-19. It's far from over and there will most likely be a spike in 2 or three weeks as governors open their states. It petrifies me. After 2 months cooped up I'm dying to get out but I'm not going to die trying it!

@merpreb I am with you 100% and I think we are in for a long haul. I don't see how things can get that much better before there is a vaccine. Our vacation that was supposed to start on March 4th was canceled on February 28th on Mass General's advice so we went out to dinner to my favorite restaurant on February 29th, not realizing at all that it would be our last time for a very long while. At least we got that in for what is going to be the last time in a very long time.

Hi Merry, This being shut in is for the birds.......lol...I hate to do this and I might chicken out yet but made an appointment to get my hair cut. Will be just me and my beautician inthe room but I can't stand my hair any longer, And then I got my appts for Mayo next month. I did have my video chat with my neurologist yesterday which went good . Unfortunately no answer has to why I keep getting the chills so bad even with getting my lexipro increased thinking it was anxiety. So don't know what to do about that. I got weeds growing in my flower bed and I don't have the energy to do anything about that so am looking for someone to do it for me......... My house is a mess. I need to get a baby blanket done and life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what the heck you will get. One byone things will get done. I keep telling myself, don't sweat the small stuff its not worth it and concerntrate on the blessings you do have. I hope you all start the day with a prayer in your heart, a smile on your face and Gods love and your families love right beside you..........PS I decided I'm not going to let COVID virus dictate my life, not going to do anything stupid either, but I'm in charge of my life.
