Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@gingerw that is amazing! I am always worried about doing too much and have my sciatica come up and not have pain pills. You go girl!

@bustrbrwn22 @lioness I listen carefully to my body, and make myself stop before I cannot move. A little discomfort is okay. It feels good to work my muscles, and it accomplishes a project!

@fiesty76 I I am walking but it is up and down the slope on our property, hauling rocks! We have about a hundred and fifty feet of 45-degree slope. I am moving rocks from there up to street level and filling in space between chain link fence and sidewalk. It's quite the workout; I have to downsize the poundage because of the slope. But I am still getting steps in, and putting stuff on my knee to keep it from screaming too loudly; don't want to wake the neighbors!

We have mostly evergreen trees in the area, but ever so often there is a seasonal tree. So, in amongst the dark green of the pine trees and Timber trees, you will see a brilliant flash of orange and yellow of a tree changing color. It is quite the awesome sight!

@gingerw, How well I know the steps and effort used in hauling rocks. I spent many summer days transporting and washing river rocks for a front yard bed. When I had a stroke that fall, neighbor insisted the stroke was caused by all of that work done with rocks...lol

Lovely to view those brilliant flashes of autumn color beginning to bring smiles to our walks.

Need to finish laundry and a Zoom meeting so I can get outside to our Indian Summer weather. Trying to decide between cleaning garden beds and walking. It's very dry & dusty, and my hand is still out of commission, so maybe a walk is better. Therapist warned me this morning not to do "anything" to mess up the most recent tendon surgery.

Sounds like good advice from the therapist, enjoy the smell of autumn and relax.

@sueinmn Oh, drat, right?? But you probably don't want to mess up the recent surgery. I hauled 7 buckets of rocks this morning, in anticipation of tomorrow's rain. Our trees are starting to drop leaves, and nights are definitely cooler. Will you have the young ones with you for your walk? Fun to teach them about how and why the trees change colors!

Thursday we had daughter & littles, went to the park and they demonstrated their skill climbing trees and we played tag. Yesterday hubby & I took my short walk and admired the changing leaves. Maybe I can get him to go again today, but if not I'll take a looong walk as the temps are in the 60's with no wind. Monday we may get our first real rain in some time, so this is the last chance to really look at leaves.

Is it possible that fall is finally here? We had temperature of 70s in the past few days. Walking is so much more pleasurable. I actually had to put a little jacket on this morning when I went on my walk. We'll have a few days of 90s again next week but I'll just enjoy what we have now. Usually I'll see Halloween decorations on houses this time of the year but I've not seen any so far. Happy walking everyone!

@mayofeb2020, Yes! I'm thinking fall is actually starting to happen and none too soon imo. vbg Sycamore trees here are starting to yellow which is always a good sign.

Although temps continue their swings between still too hot and cooler, it is a joy to start early morning walks later and observe more getting out and about. My walk Saturday in a different neighborhood park resulted in watching one family playing frisbee, several walking dogs and a few of the joggers making their ways around the paths.

Today I'll be taking an "extra" walk as I hand deliver my mail-in ballot to our local election board site. An important day for me and a citizen privilege I've never valued more.
