Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.

Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.’

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect? And Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me? Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@becsbuddy

Well, there’s not been any walking for me these last few days! Not a fan of this polar vortex! Then, I saw that my niece in Texas had more snow and it was colder than Colorado. Maybe when I finish Meals on Wheels and a grocery trip, I can do some exercises. Guess I could walk in place. I tried finding a danceable music station, but the music wasn’t great. But, I’ll try again!

I'm afraid -20F will keep me indoors again – but it's supposed to get better this week. Going to get out the yoga mat and do some stretching.Just heard from my winter neighbors, who are hunkered down in South Texas at 23F with no electricity – only the few with campers or generators have heat right now, so they are doubling & tripling up in tiny spaces. (Bye-bye Covid precautions) My cousins in Dallas have to leave their water taps all running to avoid frozen pipes. I never thought I would hear this, but my husband says he's happy to be in Minnesota, where we can handle this weather.
Stay warm & safe everyone!
Sue

Hi,
Forget the radio for danceable music. Try PANDORA, then try the orchestra leader RAY CONNIFF, or PREZ PRADO, even Johnny Mathis. I listen to music all the time, and find pandora on my iPad is best. Do you have any CDs? Good music 🎶 🎵 if you have cds you can play over and over.

Hi,
Stay in and walk around your house. My grandfather many years ago in Chicago took his walker outside, and fell in the snow and broke a hip. My good friend called me yesterday and said her 96 year old dad fell on the sidewalk in light snow and was in emergency surgery for a broken hip.
Seniors need to be especially careful.
Glad I’m in California.

Hello California Girl @funcountess! Yes, I definitely won't venture outside as long as the snow or ice prevail. I'm 85 now and I hear of so many seniors who have suffered broken hips in snow conditions. We've got enough problems! Thanks for your words of caution. Always good to hear them again. Warm regards, Laurie

I'd love to be in a warm climate like you right now, Lioness. It's been 30 below or more every night for many days where I live. Relief is forecast to be on it's way, I sure hope so!

@becsbuddy @funcountess.. Spotify is a good app. All kinds of music from the oldies to hip hop. Yes, we Californian are lucky not to experience the chilly weather. Will not complain again if the weather dips to the 50s.

@lioness. I'm ok. Still having problem with my hip bursitis and keg pain etc. Had my 2nd Moderna Saturday at Disneyland. On Saturday my arm was very sore, bp also high, no surprise there. On Sunday, I had low grade temperature under 100, bp still high. This morning I had a fright, my heart rate was out of control, went up to 130 just lying in bed. My daughter told me to use Kardia, and it showed possible Afib… That really scares me. Put a call to my cardiologist office. They finally called back, they are going to check what my loop recorder (an implant to check for irregular HR) says, and they will let my doctor know. Since then, my bp came back down. Hope this is just reaction to the vaccine. It's been just over a year since I have the loop recorder and never did it show anything wrong. Ugh.
Hope you are well. Have you got the vaccine yet? Take care.

@migizii Oh, so you must be familiar with Winnipeg's mosquitos. They're so big, they bite a chunk out of you and fly up onto a tree branch to eat it!! 😆 Good for you, keeping up with your walking! I'm on Day 9 or is it 10? 19 minutes today, at -3 degrees, with the wind making it feel like -7, according to our weather office. Cold on the face!! Brrr. Stay warm, and happy walking. Best, Laurie

@artist101 lots of big, juicy mosquitos where I live too! You’d think these cold temperatures would kill them off, but they are hardy beasts! My husband always says when there are no humans or animals left on earth, ther will still be insects🤪
