Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@luvjesus, Welcome to the walking/exercise group. We are a "do whatever motion you can" group and it has been a pleasure cyber connecting with others who are working to keep moving as well. Big congratulations on your weight loss! That is awesome! With balance and osteoporosis issues, walking is something I can do to help myself and being a part of a sharing experiences group helps keep me motivated to do those walks. I'm needing to gain some pounds so if you decide to lose some more, please consider sharing some with me, ok? Smiles Look forward to hearing from you soon.

I'm in my early 40s, but was told my xrays look like those of a 70 yr old. One doc tells me I have mixed connective tissue disease and another tells me I have SLE. They agree I have varicose veins and osteoarthritis as well as spinal issues. I've kept off 100lbs, but need to loose at least 60lbs more. I'm down for walking motivation!!! Hope I can help be motivation for y'all too!

Hi, everyone! We’re starting a new week and we need to get ourselves back to moving! Please, please talk about getting groceries, running rhoomba, everything else, WHILE you are exercising! This is an exercise group so we should exercise ourselves, not our mouths. 😁😁😁. I’ve not been great today—didn’t feel well so didn’t exercise. Darn! Maybe it’s just too hot!

Glad to be here. I enjoy Jane Fonda walking videos that can be found on youtube and Tai Chi dvd for seniors. Although, I hadn't been doing them lately.

Yes! Please take mine haha! My grandma needed to gain weight so they had her drinking Boost and pediassure shakes between meals or when she couldn't manage to eat dinner.

Sounds like you got a really good workout in today, however I am not sure that excuses you from tomorrow's workout. You're toting that 77 number pretty well, keep it up.

@lionness You are way ahead of me, but of course I'm still recovering. I did walk 4 blocks yesterday. My knees hurt this morning, probably because I haven't walked that far for a long time.
I didn't sleep very well last night and very tired this morning. It's going to take time to heal from the big back surgery. I was really hurting this morning. I got off of Oxycodone yesterday. The tramadol helped with my pain this morning, but the surgeon wants me to get off of it too.
Have been depressed since I have come home from seeing my one month checkup. I cry so easy and really miss my dog, even though shes in a good place and I would not be able to take care of her. Still have to wear my brace and no bending, twisting, or lifting anything heavy. My husband has really been busy doing ever everythingI use to do. I did get a load of towels in the washer yesterday. My husband put them in the dryer, but with my streacher (SP) I got them out and folded them
Keep up the good exercise, I will get there one of theses days, may take a year. Jeanie Lily was my dogs name.
