Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Well, I did go walking this morning! Yea, me! Didn’t have near as much excitement as @gingerw . But, I’ll just keep on walking! I’d like to pay attention to the news also, but walking is much better for my health.

“And, I’m nominating @lioness to post our next motivation”

O.K. ladies . I had a bad sciatica attack and went out walking even though each step hurt it did help I walked up the road and back about 1/2 mile was exhausted but after resting my back felt much better . I did have to ice it for the swelling but all in all if I can do it in that much pain You can too. So have a good walk breath the fresh air this will lighten your step

The mornings start early here, and it is full light by 5am. This morning there were notices on our community FB page of cougar sightings/prints all around us. This explains why the resident deer have "gone to ground" so to speak. We are on the north edge of town, not far from a favorite water source of a local creek. Last fall I was stalked by a large cougar when out walking in the early morning haze. Guess my walking with trek poles will be a bit later!

On the subject of trekking poles, how are you doing with yours, @johnbishop ?

@lioness, My osteo doc prescribes daily 1200mg of calcium and 5000mg of Vit D3 for my bones. I also take the Reclast infusion once/yr.

@lioness This is their territory, we are visitors. Commonsense safety precautions. That is why people in this little town are quick to let everyone know when there are critters around, two-legged or four-legged.

@gingerw You are so right . I always give them their territory . I had a bear one time come close to me when walking so just let it go on its way .

@lioness, Linda, I am so glad your back felt better after your walk. Sciatica flares are painful to say the least but I have also found if I can propel myself out for even a brief walk it seems to bring some relief...maybe stretching muscles ? dunno ?

Sleep positions for comfort seem the hardest to find for me. Have tried the pillow under the knee/hip; changing the bed elevation. Do you have frequent problems with sciatica attacks? What seems to help you most?

fiesty76 Yes that walk and stretching before walk helped out a lot . I usually don't have problems with my sciatica but was in a bad position for it to flare up . Stretching is the key to us who are up in age . If we dont do this we will be cripples and won't be able to get out of bed . With this virus still rampant how are you doing? and is there a lot in your area . I'm afraid it will come back with everyone not abiding by the rules ,mask, washing hands and I wear gloves when out to grocery stores . Have a good day

@lioness You are so brave! It would be hard for me to walk with a bad case of sciatica. I have that every day. Be glad to get the surgery over with and it's coming up fast. We are leaving Saturday. Love to you. Jeanie

@lillypaws . You are going to be fine . God is you guide and counseler so don't fret . You have faith in the surgeon and God so let them do the work ,recover, do as Dr says , he may want you to go to rehab for awhile . If he does I would suggest you do . They can do wonders there for a person. Talk about spelling . I think as I have gotten older my words have escaped me in spelling BE good to your self . I will be waiting to hear how it all went . Good luck .

@lioness You are so sweet. You made me feel better. I am really upbeat today. Yes, I am pretty sure I will have to have some PT. I have been to one for my back and neck. She helped my neck, but couldn't help my back. Yes, God is my guide and counseler so I won't fret. Take care and I can't wait till I can join you walking group. Love to you. Jeanie
