Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@rosemary, I can't remember who is getting out and about and who is staying more in place. Will this podiatrist appt.be one of your first forays back into a more public setting?

I'm asking because my kidney doc's office called last week with a reminder of an early June appt. I told her I just didn't feel comfortable going for the labs required before the appt. She'd said they were open or doc could do a phone consult. I asked to reschedule and then she 1st suggested a couple of weeks...that didn't work for me; Agreed to an Aug. appt. because I think by then we may hopefully have a lull in virus cases before facing the possibility of more starting in the fall.

I've walked each day starting Friday. Two friends sent by EMS to hospital emergency and admission for life threatening issues combined with other horrors of the week just overwhelmed and stopped me in my tracks. Just kept tv and internet news off all day yesterday and feel more myself this morning. Think I'll be doing at least a short walk each early morning this week just to help restore my equilibrium.

Are you expecting good news from your doc that will allow you to start back with your walks?

Hi, @fiesty76. I will be able to rejoin you and everyone for my walks. Like you, I will be doing at least a short walk for a while, and increase as I feel comfortable. I have a feeling that you are an early riser and walker, so it is a good thing that this is a virtual walking group! I did take a short walk this afternoon and was treated to a safe-distanced visit with some neighbors who were in their yard.

I want to respond to your question about my doctor appointment. He is in a small office and I have seen him before. When I made the appointment, I was told to call from my car, and wait until they called me to come And to wear a mask. And that is what I did. Everyone wore a mask, too. After making my copay, I was taken to the exam room where an assistant took my temperature. Only one other patient was there, and I never saw him, I could only hear him and the doctor talking in another room. Doctor wore gloves when he examined my foot. I felt very comfortable being in the office.

As I already shared, I can start to walk short distances and gradually increase the distance. He suggested that if I want to do longer distance that I should take two shorter walks instead. Problem is caused by an odd toe joint. Only thing for now is to wear a foot pad that cushions my foot to ease the stress and pressure of that joint to soft tissue. I wear it all day until I go to bed. I go back in one month, when he said we can hope for a 30-40% inprovement from the pain. So tomorrow I plan to lace up my walking shoes and enjoy a leisure morning stroll around the neighborhood!

@rosemary Welcome back to walking. Let us know how it goes. Good to hear that you got a diagnosis - and how careful the doc was. His counsel regarding short walks was a good one - can I send my husband there for advice? He has an achilles tendon that was partially torn and slow to heal - doesn't walk for weeks, then tries to keep up with my 3 mile walk and hurts for days! Last night we did a short (under 1 mi) walk together - waiting to see how he's doing today. It was great to see many singles, couples and families out walking in our neighborhood. Off to walk now - supposed to be 93F and humid later.

@lillypaw's Thanks The zoom I'm on is with arthritis exercise classes not just to talk to people. My son has it for his work . I'm sure hackers find away to get into anything out there . I just am on here and use my phone thats about it . I just had a zoom from the facilitator of the exercise class with inforation I need . It is closed to everyone else so just us who signed up for it . I do have Skype that I use when I connect with other people. Are you getting excited and probably nervous that is a big surgery you are having . I use to work in the O.R. with the Dr. You have faith in your Dr that is half the battle ,you'll be fine push out those dark clouds. We are with you on the table ,let us know when you can

@lioness You should be ok on zoom if you are just using it for exercise. Your son probably knows about thoses nasty people out there that can get information. They wouldn't care about your exercises. Good for you for exercises. I will have to get back to doing them once I am healed. I have gained 12 pounds. Just sitting my computer and not exercising
I'm getting anxious about my surgery now, but yet excited to get it over with. I'm concerned how my husband is going to take care of me. He's 69 and works full time out of our house, he does Cyber Secrity (sp) I use to be able to spell real good, but going through the pain in my body seems to effect my mind too.
Back to my husband, he is a good man, but was raised with a very verbal agressive father. My husband was verbally abusive to our kids as they were growing up and to me too. I just didn't know and thought is was normal. He is better now, but has a problem with cleanliness. Every thing needs to be done his way, but he cares and loves me. He is better about not being abusive. He is very intellegent sp. I am outgoing and he is not. I'm just thankful for having him to help me get through this. Don't e-mail me again till June 13th. I should be home from the hospital on the 12th. I will tell you how it went. You are one of my special people. You are so positive and I have to keep that way too. I always get anxious before a trip and then once I'm packed and in the car I feel better.
Many Blessings to you. Jeanie

The mornings start early here, and it is full light by 5am. This morning there were notices on our community FB page of cougar sightings/prints all around us. This explains why the resident deer have "gone to ground" so to speak. We are on the north edge of town, not far from a favorite water source of a local creek. Last fall I was stalked by a large cougar when out walking in the early morning haze. Guess my walking with trek poles will be a bit later!

On the subject of trekking poles, how are you doing with yours, @johnbishop ?

@lioness, My osteo doc prescribes daily 1200mg of calcium and 5000mg of Vit D3 for my bones. I also take the Reclast infusion once/yr.

@gingerw, Oh, my word! Stalked by a large cougar???? No wonder the deer have "gone to ground"! You may need something sturdier than walking poles...pepper spray? a mace on a pole?? And to think I gripe on my walks about not seeing....people...need to rethink my priorities! Yay for You!

Hi Ginger @gingerw, I haven't taken the walking sticks on the road yet but have been using them to walk in place on my sand dune stepper to help keep my balance. Suppose I should pick it up a little and take the show on the road so to speak 🙂

Well, I did go walking this morning! Yea, me! Didn’t have near as much excitement as @gingerw . But, I’ll just keep on walking! I’d like to pay attention to the news also, but walking is much better for my health.

“And, I’m nominating @lioness to post our next motivation”

@rosemarya, Rosemary, I am so glad your doc's office and doc took such good precautions in keeping you safe and comfortable during your foot exam. Several years ago, I developed plantar fasciitis from wearing non-supportive sandals while taking my youngest grands for walks in his stroller at a nearby park. It took months for the painful inflammation to heal and it was a royal lesson for me to invest in very supportive shoes, regardless of style from that time forward. Hope the pad and short walks will show big improvement in pain by your next appointment! How did your morning stroll go? It is getting hotter earlier here so I headed out at 6:45 am so I could get back in time for some more garden work before we hit the 90+ degree mark.
