19 yr old girl - tired of feeling sick
Your first thought when you read the description is probably, “Oh, it’s just anxiety.” but it’s not. I honestly hope I die, I’m tired of this.
I’m 19, living with my family. I get kidney infections and kidney stones frequently. I had a upper UTI and a 3 mm kidney stone trying to pass a little over a month ago. Skip forward to 2 weeks ago, I started feeling terrible. Constantly severely exhausted, having trouble sleeping even though I’m fatigued, feeling really hot, back pains that radiate from the middle part of my back, to the front of my ribs or to the top part of my butt, feeling sick (nausous, headaches, and malaise). I started getting a lightheaded sensation yesterday.
Went to the doctor a few days ago, they said there was blood (both red and white blood cells) in my urine, sent it off to culture and everything was fine. Then, I went to the ER later on that night because I was having sharp pangs of pain in my flank area and I felt sick. They ran a urine test and blood test, said the urine was contaminated (They found the same thing the doctor did), so they did a catheter to draw the urine and everything came out fine. They said the contaminated urine could’ve possibly been because I still had blood left from my last cycle... which wouldn’t make sense because I’d been off of it for almost 1-2 weeks. They ran no CT to see if it was possibly kidney stones.
They said it was a thoractic something muscular strain. They gave me Toradol and lidocaine patches for my back, and the pain still didn’t subside.
Skip forward to now (a few days later), I’m so exhausted physically that I can’t get out of bed. I try but it’s so painful to move, when I do stand up and move around I’ll feel lightheaded frequently, sometimes I feel like I’m going to pass out, I feel nauseous on and off throughout the day. I’ve basically been bound to my bed since this happened. I have absolutely no energy, yet I still want to do things... I just have no energy and when I do go do stuff (drive to my friends, go do something in the house, etc...) I feel dizzy, lightheaded, or like I’m going to pass out.
It’s a struggle for me to take showers, do daily hygeine, clean, basic teenager things and whatnot because of all of this.
Now when I say, “I hope I die” I don’t mean it in a suicidal / depressed way. I just am tired of feeling like this because it starts when I wake up and keeps going until I eventually am able to sleep... shoot even in my dreams I dream about how sick and dead I feel, so It’s constant.
I honestly feel like I’m dying and I don’t know what else to do.

@meganm0710 - I guess this is your first visit to Mayo Connect? Welcome! I hope we can help pointing you in the right direction. I am so sorry for your suffering! I kind of know what that feels like- but you are so young!
It sounds as if your problems originate in the kidneys. I’m surprised that nobody got any imaging of your abdomen.
Being 19 I would also guess you don’t have a regular doctor taking care of you- like an internist or family physician. You live at home- do your parents have a good doctor that you can start seeing?
I think it would be a good idea for you to find an internist- specializing in Internal Medicine. This doctor could order CT scan or other imaging to begin with and can also refer you to other specialists. There could be several reasons why you feel so bad now. If necessary, ask family to help you making an appointment and getting you there. Don’t wait! Can you please give us follow- ups after you see your next doctor? Hang in there!
Thank you! And yeah! I got in to a Nephrologist yesterday and they want me to do a 24 hour pee test. They think I might be passing kidney stones harder than ever which in turn is causing alot of kidney infections / UTIs! I feel alot better knowing that there is a reason for all my suffering, the next thing is, find medication for my pain! I do have a GP but she’s not that great.. so I might look into finding a new one!
@meganm0710 - Good start that you got to see a Nephrologist! You should probably start looking for a new GP- you should be able to trust your regular doctor. I’m very interested in what your tests show.
Yeah, I’m curious too! I went back to the hospital 2 nights ago, they found blood in my urine (not alot but still there) but didn’t want to do a cat scan based off of the info I was giving about the pain. When I’m hurting; it hurts regardless of what position I’m in, but certain positions can make it worse. Thankfully they gave me Tramadol and Soma, they gave me Soma because they think it’s related to my muscles... but it doesn’t make sense if there’s blood in my urine. The Soma doesn’t really do anything but make me tired, but the usually the second dose of Tramadol works like a charm.
I did my 24 hour pee test for my Nephrologist... unfortunately, me and my dad got confused and I ended up messing up.. I’m going to do it again Sunday! I’m really interested to learn what’s going on with my kidneys.
Also, when I was at the hospital they said an ultrasound would be necessary because it’s less radiation than a CT (I think, don’t remember what he said.) but didn’t do one... I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t do / say much about the blood in my urine. They were more focused on the “muscular” pain.
@meganm0710 - it will be interesting to get the results from the 24 hour Urine you are going to do. Ultrasound is very useful for studying the kidneys. Will your nephrologist order that test?
Ues! And I’m not sure... probably though!
