Candida Overgrowth

Posted by kateallie @kateallie, Feb 9, 2020

I am almost 59, and have been suffering for years with Candida, more than five years undiagnosed until I was in stage 4 of the disease stage 5 can be organ failure or even death, I've been in treatment for a little over a year. I have researched till I'm cross-eyed. I know more about this than my doctor, but the second I stop taking anti-fungal it returns within days. I have done detox, restrictive diets (no sugar, carbs, etc.) (do not feed the beast!) until my weight become very low, but to no avail. It has taken so much of my life from me, at times I have been so sick, weak, in pain, I could not walk unassisted. Prior to contracting this I weight trained, could speed walk 3 miles in less than a half hour.Currently I'm on oral anti-fungal as well as vaginal meds and probiotics to stay close to well as possible. I have resigned myself that this will be my life or this will eventually be the end of me (it had gotten into my heart a few months ago), is in my ears still, vagina, and I battle oral thrush, but I have finally had a clean blood test for the first time in 15 months. Please help me find the cure, or a doctor who knows of the cure(a real doctor not a internet sales person). Thank you.

Hi @kateallie and welcome to Connect. That must be so frustrating and exhausting to find no treatment's that work.

Here is another discussion where you can what others have said about candida: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/candida/

Back to you @kateallie, where did the candida start? Is it all stemming from digestive system?

Look for a functional medical doctor. I just finished my treatment and I have no symptoms.

@mm2020- Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It sounds as if you have had this for a while. My sister had Candida too. She made her own food and brought it with her for over a year. She contacted hers from too many antibiotics. It finally fizzled out.

What have your symptoms been and what treatment did you finish?

I was hoping to get some insight on what kind of physician I should consult for Candida overgrowth? Here are the list of symptoms I have which lead me to believe I have candida overgrowth:

- Oral Thrush - I have bumpy spots on mid to back end of my tongue with white patches.
- Digestive Issues - I have had digestive issues for the past 7-8 yrs.. I experience constipation, gas diarrhea, bloating even when I consume foods that have slightly higher sugar content.
Skin Problems - Throughout my college days, I suffered with skin problems. Mostly cystic acne and peeling of my skin. I thought it was hormonal but when I controlled my diet and consumed food with less sugar content, my skin started getting better instantly.
- Joint Pain - This is a very recent symptom. Few weeks ago, I am able to pop my joints (ankle and wrist joints mainly). For the last couple of weeks, my left thumb has developed mild to moderate pain.

If anyone has had similar symptoms, I would greatly appreciate if any assistance on how to cure this condition. Thanks!

I was hoping to get some insight if anyone has treated acne by treating candida overgrowth? Here is why I believe my cause for acne is due to candida overgrowth

Throughout my college days, I suffered with skin problems. Mostly cystic acne and peeling of my skin. I thought it was hormonal but when I controlled my diet and consumed food with less sugar content, my skin started getting better instantly.

To give an example, if I had a meal with moderate amount of carbs (pasta) I would start developing acne cysts within a few hours. Using probiotics (25 billion CFU) and bittergourd supplements has gotten my acne in control for the past couple of years.

If anyone has had similar symptoms, I would greatly appreciate if any assistance on how to cure this condition. Thanks!

Hi @sam595, I wanted to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect! You will see that I moved your conversation to a discussion that is already talking about Candida overgrowth. I did this so that you can connect with others that have your same diagnosis. I also included your discussion in the skin health group as well so you can get the opinions of people from that group and not have to go through several different avenues to get responses.
Have you consulted with your local physician about these issues as well?

Hi @amandaburnett, I consulted with a dermatologist but the doc dismissed my claim that my acne was due to candida overgrowth. I was put on Isotretinoin for three months but it didn't provide any relief.
Can you please let me know if there are doctors who specialize in treating candida overgrowth? Thanks!

Hi @sam595, Mayo Clinic does have physicians that treat chronic systemic candidiasis. They also have several clinical trials regarding fungal infections. I have linked that below so you can check those out.

I thought you might be interested in reading this article as well.

In addition, here is a study that Mayo published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings that may provide some more information.

@sam595, where are you located?
