7% Saline Solution

Got a supply of 7% vials and got a real jolt in my throat when I began inhaling it. However I quickly adapted to it and was able to finish the vial. Within a few minutes I was coughing and bringing stuff up - a first. I never had a timely response to 0.9. Bottom line: I guess the 7% solution is...well the real solution. Not to be confused with the Sherlock and Sigmund thing. Forgive my corny effort at mirth. Don

Thank you so much for that info. I have never washed my tubing nor ever read about doing that and didn’t know the tubing could be cleaned. I will start doing that because it has been a concern of mine. I am so careful to disinfect the nebulizer but have never cleaned the tubing. I appreciate your help.

@cynthiajewell7 Hi, I think the tubing itself is supposed to be thrown away. Then, clean the cup and mouthpiece after each use.

Thanks for your message - I’m trying 7% saline in my nebulizer when I finish my 3% and I’ll know that I can expect it to bother my throat. I’m glad to hear it worked so well. I’ve used 3% for a few months and it usually makes me cough up stuff but not as much or as often as it should.

Have people had other side effects from the 7% saline?

@kathyhg Hi Kathy. I am so used to the 7% saline now that it rarely makes me cough. I have never had any issue with using it.

Thank you Kathy. My cups and tubing come together so I never have extra tubing. Do you have a location that sells tubing only? I am at Mayo right now getting ready for a bronchoscopy. This place is amazing!!!

Do you dose with 7 twice or once a day? I was told that the benefit of 3% was that could be used twice a day. It certainly empties me.

Thumperguy, do you nebulize albuterol before the 7% saline or will it work just as well with out using albuterol?

@cynthiajewell Not thumperguy, but I neb either way depending...If the asthma is bothering, or I have a cough or cold, I neb first with levalbuterol (similar to albuterol) and them with the saline. If not, just 7% saline. Sometimes I use the Aerobika with the saline if the saline alone doesn't provoke a lung-clearing bout of coughing. Sometimes I use just the saline, and if later I feel there is still stuff to cough up I use the Aerobika alone. Have you talked to your doc or respiratory therapist about their recommendations for you? How each of us does things all depends on our specific cases - how severe, how easy/difficult it is to clear our lungs, maybe even other conditions. For example, my daughter has had vocal cord hemorrhages, no 7% saline for her according to her docs. Sue

Cynthia, don't know if it works as well w/o albuterol, but I've never used it. It's never been mentioned by either of two pulmo docs I've seen over time. Don
