I don't really think there actually IS a connection with pre diabetes and thyroid....I"m headed to Mayo on Tue .. will find out! AS far as Graves,,, I'm hyper with my thyroid.. had nothing to do with the nodule as far as I know.
I am surprised to find that those with nodules aren't being associated with cancer, as mine was. I don't remember any test to determine this, but they said it was cancer and they said I had it for years. I had already survived a breast lumpectomy which was level one cancer.
I insisted on being checked for ovarian cancer twice when I had bladder repair surgery and found no sign of cancer. At my age I don't worry much about it because I eat almost no sugar to feed cancer and I love vegetables that are thought to be an anti-cancer diet. So I sleep pretty well at night and if I should get more cancer at my age, I will make plans for my demise as gracefully as possible. So far I am able to contribute in music and activities at church so I feel pretty blessed by my outcomes of the past. But now I want to read more. Dorisena

Nope. I never have had any problems with Graves disease. I had low thyroid early in my marriage and took Synthroid which didn't seem to help my energy level at all but I had lots of stress, way too much. I had to change doctors and he made me go off the pills for a month and then tested me and said I didn't need any Synthroid. He left the medical profession shortly after that and I dragged myself through the next thirty or forty years until my husband died and I had the bladder, thyroid, and diabetes issues. After I was old enough for Medicare, it seemed I received better attention to my health problems because Medicare covered the costs. I think it was a little late for the best results in health care. But that is an opinion, not a fact. That's my story and I hope it helps someone. Dorisena

now I'm curious,,, so there are no real tests for nodule cancer other than doing a needle biopsy? IF that is the only way to know,,, then why don't nodules be tested more often??? puts a lot of questions in my head.. I guess since,, in my personal experience now,,, they are taking out the thyroid anyway so maybe they will test it then..??
I had a needle biopsy for breast cancer by the local surgeon, not a specialist in cancer. I thought it was routine. But with the thyroid they just sent me to the chief surgeon in the department of the big hospital who said it was cancer, so I don't know how everyone seemed to know without testing. He was so excellent you can't even see a scar, but then there was the vocal chord damage which the ENT denied there was a problem. So it took 18 months for another voice therapist to tell me what happened and that he couldn't help me at that point. The only thing the doctors all said is that if you have thyroid cancer, it is the one to have because it is curable. They were very confident about that but tested me a year later to confirm that I had no cancer cells floating around.
I am only relating my experience and I have no idea if everything was the best treatment. I learned in college science class in my middle age that a growth is a DNA change result and that a growth is a growth and the teacher didn't differentiate between cancerous and benign if it kept growing. He said the DNA change will increase the risk of future growths the rest of your life. Now after the Genome project success, the scientists are working on DNA repair. Interesting, but a little late for some of us. I am not scared about all of this. But I am happy to share my experiences. I'm still alive and active. Dorisena
I don't use the word "benign" in my vocabulary because I don't trust the definition as non=cancerous. I do trust the word precancerous. It means take some action, especially with your diet, activities, and attitude toward life. Dorisena
Dummy me! I just found an article explaining the relationship between thyroid problems and diabetes and common sense should of made me realize that there must be a relationship. After I study the article, which is above my head in understanding, I will get the main points and report back in common language. The article explains what leads to hyperglycemia and what leads to hypoglycemia. I suffered from hypoglycemia for years and blamed it all on stress and eating. So I was surprised when I flip flopped to hyperglycemia. I think I will understand it better if I study the article. The article said genetics plays a role as well. That is too much for me right now to fathom because my family did not have diabetes problems. Dorisena

The article is The relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and related thyroid diseased by the Journal of Diabetes Research. On the first page is a list of related articles as well. It will take time to study, but we can learn something, I think. Dorisena
