Entyvio and hair loss

Posted by sandyjr @sandyjr, Oct 20, 2019

My daughter had a Crohn’s flare this past year which culminated in surgery in August. During this time she has lost approximately 40 pounds. She came through the surgery fine but had no appetite and found it difficult to eat after the surgery. She is finding out what food she can tolerate now. She has been on Entyvio infusions and her last one was in September. Her hair is falling out by the handful. She is taking several medications, but we are thinking it is the Entyvio. Has anyone with Crohn’s suffered a severe hair loss? Has anyone had this happen due to Entyvio? Has the hair loss been permanent or does it grow back after a while?

Yes but, like the makers of entyvio, he said Entyvio doesn’t cause hair loss. ( I am here to tell you, it does!). My Hair loss is significant, i’m just hoping to find anyone here who experienced the same thing but can give me a timeframe, when to expect this to stop Or hope that it will stop. Thanks!!

Hi! DOES ANYONE KNOW IF ENTYVIO HAIR LOSS IS PERMANENT or does it subside?? The drug company says it does not cause hair loss but that’s not true. I know. I’m living it. I just had my third loading dose. Next one is in 8 weeks. Is Humaira just as bad with hair loss as Entyvio? I agreed to try Entyvio bc I was told it was the lesser of the two evils.😩🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

As you can see from former posts, I do know about hair loss with entyvio. I can’t give you an exact timeline, but I can give you hope. According to my former info, she had Crohn’s surgery at the end of August 2019. Her hair started coming out in September. She continued with the entivyo infusions until January or February of this year I think. Unfortunately she had lost all but a few strands of hair. It broke my heart. Her hair started coming back probably sometime in the spring and is now fully back. I think she has gotten it cut at least a couple of times as it needed shaping. Her hair is growing like weeds now. The person that cut her hair told her to take prenatal vitamins and use hair conditioner that does not rinse out. She had beautiful hair down to her waist when this started and now it is touching her shoulders. I don’t know where you live, but the timing for her was just right. We live in NJ, so wearing knit hats during the winter worked and she wore ball caps in the spring when it was coming back in. Her doctor also did not know that entyvio caused hair loss. The drug company should tell people...maybe they know people will not want to take it if they know. There is light at the end of the tunnel. I think you will be fine. Take care.

Hi. So initially when your daughter started the Entyvio she had all the hair loss BUT after the initial time frame was over, her hair came back WHILE she continued using Entyvio? I apologize if I am getting the facts wrong with your daughter!! Praise God her hair came back!!!! It’s very humbling to be a woman with hair loss. Sorry. That’s my vanity talking. 😮🙏😚🙄

My daughter had beautiful long, thick hair when she went on entyvio. Her hair started falling out while using it. The doctor did not know what caused the hair loss. It seemed that entyvio was not working so she was put on Humira. Her hair started coming back after she stopped the Entyvio. The Humira did not affect her hair. Her hair is fully back now. I’m sorry I cannot give you a better timeline.

THANK YOU! That helps enormously! I have the option of switching to Humira and I think I will!!! This is so heartbreaking. It’s bad enough fighting this disease or keeping it in remission just didn’t think I’d have to deal with hair loss too! You are so kind to respond so quickly to me! Sooooo thankful! Molly

It broke my heart when the hair loss happened. It seems that anything she has done in her life has been a struggle. She seemed to take it in stride, but it bothered her and she just wants to feel better. She can’t seem to get this flare under control....none of the biologists worked. If I was in your position, I would also take the Humira. Have a positive attitude and good luck 👍🙏🏻.

THANK YOU! I really appreciate the kind words. I think I am going to incorporate regular exercise and do some changing of my diet. It may not be what I necessarily like to eat but I don’t want to live with this flare any longer either. I’m truly wondering if it’s something I’ve been eating wrong that led to this UC diagnosis in the first place? It’s just so odd to me how so many people have GI issues. Either that or we are talking more about them??? I really needed your positive reinforcement! I will let you know how it works out. Take care. You’re an awesome mom looking out for your daughter....but that’s what moms do!!! God bless!

I read a very interesting book...Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? By Mark Hyman MD. He is a doctor at Cleveland Clinic and I found what he said really interesting. Our food is highly contaminated. Eat whole grains....well, the big farms out west use glyphosate, so anything made from their products is probably contaminated. Your bread and cereal etc may not be healthy. He also discusses fats and how the medical field vilifies fats. You need fat in your diet. There are good fats. Saturated fats are not especially bad. I eat pretty much only olive and coconut oil. You can eat beef...you are not going to die like they infer. Try to eat organic and non GMO. I make my own bread using organic flour and try not to eat boxed stuff at the grocery store. Another good book is Know your Fats by Mary Enig. Once you get past the technical makeup of fats (which show how the makeup works, but is confusing if you do not understand science), she explains the good fats which are pretty much discouraged. Big companies have a lot to say about your food and it is often for their benefit, not yours. Yes, there are way to many people with intestinal issues.

Hi! I have been on Entyvio since December of 2019. While I haven’t had hair loss, I do have a problem with dry and brittle hair and have never had this issue before. I have tried every mask, oil, treatment, stopped coloring treatments (or have drastically minimized them) and nothing seems to improve the dryness of my hair. The entyvio has helped my symptoms of Crohn’s so this is just something I have to deal with but I feel the frustration!

Hi @sandyjr that must be so frustrating to have your daughter experience hair loss along with the Crohn's symptoms.
Here is an article from Medical News Today on entyvio. Note that it says others have reported hair loss with entvio but their has been no evidence of this in the medications studies. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325968.php

@dval has experience with entyvio and may be able to share their experience.

Back to you @sandyjr have you asked your daughter's doctor about this?

Since I have been on Entyvio, I have experienced a lot of hair loss. My shirts are covered in hair everyday. I can run my hand through my hair and end up with no less than 10 strands every time. It’s very upsetting.

I have been on all different medications for my UC but I can directly correlate my hair loss to the Entyvio, so depressing! I've had 3 doses, it doesn't seem to be working for me yet either. I debating on whether or not to just quit it and try something else instead. I'm afraid the hair loss will only get worse if I stay on it...I wish someone could tell me it will get better even if I stay on it? Was hoping it was the leading doses that caused it but I don't know. This disease stinks I have had it for almost 30 years, I'm so sorry you and your daughter are going through this. Thanks for your reply I appreciate it!

I started losing hair by the bunches after my third treatment, also. It’s very depressing. I constantly have hair on my shirts. It’s everywhere. I’m afraid when I wash my hair and have to comb it out because it’s worse when I do it. Sigh. I started taking biotin.
