Entyvio and hair loss

Posted by sandyjr @sandyjr, Oct 20, 2019

My daughter had a Crohn’s flare this past year which culminated in surgery in August. During this time she has lost approximately 40 pounds. She came through the surgery fine but had no appetite and found it difficult to eat after the surgery. She is finding out what food she can tolerate now. She has been on Entyvio infusions and her last one was in September. Her hair is falling out by the handful. She is taking several medications, but we are thinking it is the Entyvio. Has anyone with Crohn’s suffered a severe hair loss? Has anyone had this happen due to Entyvio? Has the hair loss been permanent or does it grow back after a while?

Anyone getting Entyvio infusions for their colitis? Would like to know any side effects you are experiencing, i.e. hair loss, bone, joint, or muscle pain, etc.

I am on my 3rd infusion of Entivio (Nov 30th/21) AND scheduled for my 4th Jan.30/22. I have lost 99.9% of my thick curly hair! I have Crohn's. Is the hair loss due to infusions or Crohn's or BOTH?? HELP NO ONE KNOWS the answer not even my GI! Will my hair ever grow back? Anyone else out there have the same problem?? Thanks.

Hi Meeshka, you're not alone. I moved your question about Entyvio and hair loss so you can connect with other members like @sandyjr @dval @ginam @mollys10 @buchansd @ladaarts.

Here's a study that may offer some explanation.
- Frequency and associated factors of hair loss among patients with inflammatory bowel disease: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4284339/

How long have you had Crohn's?

Hi Colleen, and thank you for your reply. I was just diagnosed this August/21 w/Crohn's but according to the colonoscopy the GI estimates it has been ongoing for some time how long?? I don't know, but this just did  not happen overnight. I had a very thick curly hair which I am missing so much now. My hair loss seemed to have started after a month on the budesonide, then declined steadily even after my infusions.( I am off the budesonide now and only on the infusions every 2 mths) I had stage 4 anemia that was corrected, and am taking probiotics, and organic vitamins/minerals etc. hopefully in time my hair will start to grow back. I was curious if there was anyone else out there going this??
Sincerely,Michele

My daughter has Crohn’s disease and after a long time with a long list of drugs, she is starting Remicade infusions. I think this is her last biologic. When she took the Entyvio, all of her hair fell out. From what I have read, it is one of the side effects of Remicade. I am interested in knowing what experiences people have had taking this biologic. Is hair loss a definite side effect?

I am on Entyvio infusions and experiencing hair loss. I attributed my hair loss due to age, did not know it was a side affect of Entyvio. What a shame, my hair has always been my crowning glory, very long and I wear in a braid. The infusions have helped me reclaim a normal life. I guess I will have to give up my hair to feel good.

I had breast cancer and wore the cold cap through all my 12 weeks of treatment. Cold cap worked great no hair loss or very little. That was in march of last year. I started Entyvio infusions in September of last year and started loosing my hair by October and I have lost so much you could make a wig from it. I started saving it to show my doctor sense mid November. It is now January. If this keeps up I’ll be bald! It has helped with my UC but being bald is not going to work for me.

Thanks for sharing this valuable post. Hope your daughter feeling better today. I also have same case (using Entyvio causes hair lose). So could you tell about the names of vitamin and conditioner that they help to improve her hair to grow back. Thanks again.

I will have to check with her, but I think the lady that cuts her hair told her to use Mane n Tail conditioner and to leave it in her hair. There is a picture of a horse on the bottle, but it is sold in the grocery store…not a farm store. That would scare someone off. In any event, she has lovely long hair again.
