Botox safety with Guillain-barre Syndrome

Posted by lhirsch3 @lhirsch3, Aug 15, 2019

I am recovering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Is it safe for me to have cosmetic fillers like Restylane? Also, are Botox injections safe?

Have you discussed the treatments with your doctor? I did find some negative information but I would still discuss it with my doctor.

I talked to my neurologist yesterday. He said it may make me tired but would not trigger another bout of GBS. He had no opinion on Restylane. He’s rather hasty and didn’t seem knowledgeable in either area, and so I thought I’d seek other opinions. I did run it by two female neurologists when I was in the hospital and in rehab. They both felt Botox and fillers are safe. The both use Botox for patients with other issues like migraines.

Is there a neurologist at Mayo that might have an opinion on my post? I’d be happy to connect with someone who’s really informed and may have addressed this in the past.

@lhirsch3 I'm not sure any of our members can answer that question since Connect is a patient to patient group and we can't give medical advice but we can share our personal health experiences.

That’s fine. Thanks for clarifying that for me. I’ll keep researching.

Did you ever get botox? I want to get it done but I to had GBS 38 years ago- FULLY recovered on its own in 6 months time. But, I’ve noticed that we can’t take the flu shot. It’s on the paper you sign to take the shot so I have wondered about this! I need my 11 done and would love some lips again....

I was diagnosed with a very mild case of GBS in January 2022. I checked with my neurologist and he said there is no reason I shouldn’t have Botox injections since I no longer have GBS. He is very knowledgeable on Botox and gives classes on it to the public. I was scared to do it but about two weeks ago (late November) I went for it. Glad I did. Everything went fine. Just as a side note I am still recovering from some damage done by GBS to my throat muscles and it was still okay. Didn’t notice any change.
He has not told me that I can get flu or covid vaccine as of yet but he said possibly with time. I don’t have the courage to do that since we believe my GBS was caused by the shingles vaccine.
Hope that helps someone.

Welcome @brisa, Thanks for sharing your experience. Sorry to hear that your GBS symptoms came after getting the shingles vaccine. Do you mind sharing what you were searching for when you found Connect?

Hiya, I am just going through this at the moment as wanting to get Botox for my frown line, I had gbs in 2009…. Have had flu jabs and covid jabs (which here in nz, we get told it could be unsafe for past gbs patients) but I was fine, I’m thinking of just doing the Botox and seeing how it goes. Your post has given me hope x
