Zometa infusions to help prevent bone loss from cancer treatments
Has anyone had Zometa infusions to help combat the effects of aromatase inhibitors (bone loss). I have osteoporosis of my spine and osteopenia of the hip and am told I need this to prevent future fractures.

I agree with Oilermama about hydration, also you will getting an infusion in a setting with people to help if needed.
and mine only took about 20 minutes -- way faster than the chemo.
@baby99, I would ask your oncologist about whether to postpone the Zometa injection or not.
Hi everyone. I too had become, chemo and radiation and am now on anastrozole. Sorry for the silly question, but what are the infusions you are getting and what are they for?
Hello Karendb, part of losing your estrogen, from treatment, menopause or both is losing bone density. The zometa infusions are to strengthen your bones. In some cases because we are special we get to lose our estrogen earlier than normal, and more completely. This can cause us to lose bone density younger and need early intervention.
Thank you for answering so quickly.
Hi @baby99,
I agree with @colleenyoung that you should consult with your oncologist. I also thought you might be interested in this information about zometa and joint pain: https://www.cancer.net/coping-with-cancer/physical-emotional-and-social-effects-cancer/managing-physical-side-effects/joint-pain
I will be starting Zometa transfusion on Sept. 3, 2021, (one every 6 months). I have been on Anastropole since 01/4/2021 and am doing fine with that so far. I read that if your transfusion for Zometa is 30 minutes instead of 15 minutes that you may have fewer side effects. What is your experience with the drug. How much should you hydrate before and should you eat before? Thanks so much.
Mine were quickly changed to every 6 months after the first 3 because there was a mistake in the orders. But with no real side effects or issues. My infusions take about 20 minutes, they add a little saline to an IV then do a push of the drug over about 5 minutes then finish the little bag of saline, then I am off to have lunch.
I try and drink an extra big glass of water the day before, and an extra glass the morning of, and an extra glass that night. Eating normally, no nausea involved. I drive an hour and a half to my doctor, so I get to go to my favorite Italian afterwards. Another comment my doctor made is if you are not taking a calcium and D supplement before this to start taking one. I take 600 Ca, plus Vit. D every day. Are taking any calcium supplements?
I am scheduled to get Zometa infusion every 6 months. I wonder why the difference especially since your Dr. seems especially knowledgeable. Also do you hydrate before (more than usual).
