Zometa infusions to help prevent bone loss from cancer treatments

Posted by trixie1313 @trixie1313, Jun 13, 2019

Has anyone had Zometa infusions to help combat the effects of aromatase inhibitors (bone loss). I have osteoporosis of my spine and osteopenia of the hip and am told I need this to prevent future fractures.

I had Zometa infusions for a short time but had to stop it (on advice of my current oncologist) due to the need to have a tooth extracted since it can cause necrosis of the jaw. I was able to wait for almost 5 months to have the extraction but need more serious dental work so am currently on Letrozole. Not too many side effects but pretty severe neuropathy in the hands!

I had zometa infusions for quite some time and now my teeth are crazy! My jaw cracks and hurts and I believe it is necrosis. I now longer take the infusions, but the damage is done. If you can avoid it, then I would!!

Would you mind telling me how many years you were on it, what age you started it, and when you ended it? Thank you so much. I'm 70 and just not sure it's worth it.

@marymargaretsh I was 65 when I started it and had just retired. I was on it for about 4 or 5 years. I am 71 now so I probably stopped it 1 or 2 years ago.

Thank you so much! I'll try to avoid it if at all possible.

@marymargaretsh If I had to do it again (I pray I don't) I would NOT do it!!

@itc1234 , welcome. Are you on Zometa infusions? How are you?

I just had my last Zometa infusion after several years. Steady decline in bone density. Oncologist has referred me to Primary Care Doctor for osteoporosis treatment. Mastectomy 6/17, stage 1 grade 2. Anastrazole for 7 years. Severe morning joint pain hip/lower back. Neuropathy in toes. Now swollen lymph nodes in neck. 76 years old.

I agree with @sally484, avoid it if you can. I only had 2 infusions and already have broken teeth and jaw pain. I’m only 53!
