Lodging transplant patients

Posted by jeaniecm @jeaniecm, May 14, 2019

I will be having a SCT at Mayo in Rochester The transplant will be outpatient so I will need an apartment for my husband and me during a 6 week stay. I would like information from others who have had extended stay, The two places I’m considering is Charter House and Broadway Plaza

@jeaniecm, in addition to @amlak helpful tips and experience about staying at Charter House in Rochester, I'd like to bring @llwortman (Linda) into the conversation. I believe she stayed at Charter House for an extended period while her husband was in care.

Hello:
We lived st the Charter House for three months
Sep 15 - Dec 15. The entire staff is outstanding, professional, caring, & knowledgeable. My husband was transferred from another hospital in another state. Mayo teams helped save his life.

We needed to move from a Charter House end unit condo into a larger one bedroom where we could push a wheel chair with less difficulty. The entire staff worked with us during a busy time when condos were limited.

Daily cleaning staff was amazingly helpful, weather we needed cookware, towels or a recliner. They have everything.

When my husband was finally out of his body cast, he had unexpected Neuro surgery, again the staff was very kind about accommodating our continued stay and every need.

Since we stayed more than 30 days, we did not have to pay a room tax.

Being in the skyway system helped more than
we could imagine.

Having a condo was better than a hotel room.
And price was the same.

If you have a car, parking is included. If we needed assistance with anything the Mayo staff was there.

There were events that we could attend as well. A little grocery. A breakfast area. And a top floor dining area. Mail delivery to the front desk.

I am an 11 year lung cancer survivor. I visited with people who had transplant surgery and Mayo has a department where patients can meet others in transplant.

We have not experienced more outstanding care anywhere. At Mayo it’s about the best quality of life and it helped us heal quicker.

I hope this helps. All the best. Personally, I feel we were in the best medical facility in the world. And to top it off, we can Connect and have the support of understanding and caring people.

I wish you all the best.

i know i am writing a lot but i want to second Linda's comments about the staff at Charter house. We had a medical
emergency late at night and we were supposed to leave early next morning. Of course we could not and Linda, in housing coordination Dept. , there did not hesitate in extending our stay in same apt. even though other people were supposed to be there that same day. I was worried that will have to look for hotel or atleast another apt in Charter house.. but no problem..Charter House staff came through for us. Amazing people.

Yes i did forget to mention that The Social workers have a list of hotels that give a Mayo Clinic rate. But also ask the hotel because the one i stayed in was not on the list and they gave me a Mayo rate. One other thing i might mention. The holiday inn express also help me get breakfast by preparing a plate in the kitchen for me since we can't eat at buffet.

Danab, thanks for the Info. Every time I attempted to stay at "The Healing Home" it was unavailable. Hopefully when I finally get the call for the transplants and 2 month stay - it will be available. You got a great rate at the HI - other than asking for the "MAYO" rate - did you need another code? Ben

Ben, no i didn't they believed me. The mask i was wearing might have helped. They are literally 2 miles from the Hospital so i think they probably get a lot of patients from Mayo.
