Orange Tongue
About a week and a half ago I developed a painful tongue. A week ago today, my tongue turned orange and about 5 days ago the pain dulled and now my tongue feels like it has been burned. My tongue still remains a strong yellow/orange color. I also have a weird taste in my mouth. I wouldn't say it is a metallic taste, just a taste that is different from my neutral taste. I went to the doctor and she prescribed me antifungals, which I take 5 times a day for 14 days. It has been two days on the medication and my tongue has not changed color at all. The antifungal is irritating my mouth a bit. I am just worried that the cause may not be thrust, but something else. I am not pregnant. Does anyone have any ideas? I am starting to get worried.

Hello, @jenniferforte. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
Is it just your tongue that is burning or your whole mouth? Was it your primary provider that prescribed you the anti-fungal? As lioness mentioned- we are a patient to patient group where discussions experiences but we do not diagnose or give medical information on Mayo Clinic Connect.

How are your symptoms today?
Hello, I am having a very similar experience. Orange tongue, metallic taste in my mouth and a burning in my bronchial tubes. I have been prescribed the same as you and after 5 days there is no improvement. Could you please tell me if yours went away and what the final outcome was?
Thank you for your help
Fran
Hi @franw, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Do you or your provider know the cause of your symptoms? If the anti-fungal isn't working, perhaps that rules out that cause. As this article points out, there are several possible causes:

Do you have a follow-up appointment scheduled with your doctor?
I have had a swab and full blood panel, all the results are normal. He now wants to treat me for acid reflux even though I do not have symptoms. Beyond this he has nothing else to offer me.
Hello. I know it has been a while since you posted this, but I am wondering if you have had any resolution to this, and if so what it was.
I developed an orange tongue years ago and discovered after much digging and researching that it was likely due to an oral overgrowth of Acintomyces spp. bacteria. It went away after treatment with penicillin. I did develop issues with my digestive tract around the same time. Not sure if it was related or not, but I was eventually diagnosed with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth.
I just wanted to share my experience. I hope your orange tongue has resolved!
Hello @heatherme and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect!
I appreciate your post and sharing about your problem and the solution that you found.
If I may ask, what brought you to Mayo Connect?
I have been dealing with an orange tongue for a year. As has been done with everyone else, cultures and blood work have been done. I have been treated with several different azoles and nystatin (8 weeks), the last azole 200mg for thee weeks and the stuff is still happy. My tongue changes to bright green and also to a cottage cheese like surface. I am now on 10 days of a tablet, my tongue is white but I do not taste what I would describe as a combination of rotten eggs visited by Pepe le Pue. The last culture was taken to regrow the stuff and find something to kill it! I understand that is finding a sensitivity, I just want it dead and gone! Any ideas are welcome.
I was on antibiotics for two years, I have NHL with hypogammaglobulinemia with at one time a "wee" bit of an iron deficiency, I like challenges, this one, not so much.
Hi jfn, I'm wondering if you read @heatherme's post above. She seems to have found success with penicillin treatment. Has that been suggested for you?
You mention that you also have non-Hodgkin-lymphoma (NHL). You may wish to also join the Blood Cancers & Disorders group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/blood-cancers-disorders/
Might the orange tongue be related to cancer treatments?
Just found out my 3 weeks of 200mg fluconazole was for nothing, as the lab results just came back.
