Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Feb 22, 2019

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

@contentandwell, Much like your husband, my 84 yr young friend likewise not only enjoys but seems to thrive on what others consider a "deplorable" diet. A chocolate chip cookie and coke for breakfast; baloney on white bread for lunch, anything goes for dinner and sweet snacks in-between. No vitamins or meds ever touch his tongue but he never needs a dentist; has no need for a physician and has more energy and strength than many half his age....go figure!!! LOL

@fiesty76 My husband really is amazing. They are saying older people have less reaction to the vaccines because our immune systems are not as strong. Well, my husband was miserable for two days and even had a mild temperature! Go figure.

I started limiting salt years ago for some reason, I'm not sure why. Now if anything has much salt at all I can really taste it, as can my husband because he's used to my cooking of course. That does not diminish the love for salty snacks though!

@imallears, You and my older grandson must share DNA. If I'd not been present at his birth, I'd question if we brought home the "right" baby because from the get go, just the thought of anything chocolate makes our 15 yr old queasy to this day!

For years, I loved Halloween because that was the time to buy my year's worth of candy. Halloween became a favorite holiday for my daughter when this little trick-or-treater, turned over all of his gathered chocolates to her. At about 9 yrs, he "smartened up" and began suggesting that in return, it only seemed fair for her to exchange a few dollar bills for the chocolates. Maybe an investment broker in the works? smiles

Like you, Mary, I've enjoyed coffee all different ways and at present, it is with half & half. In TX, ordering tea at a restaurant meant the standard "iced tea". On my first trip to NYC, I was very surprised to order tea and be served hot tea. It was also a surprise to order water and it came with no ice. Added to the teas you mention, I additionally like Jasmine and other herbal teas but without sweetener.

Must be a difference in the type of caffeine tea and coffee have because if I drink coffee at night, I have trouble sleeping. Not the case with hot or iced tea before bed. Does this happen to you or others?

Brewed coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine vs 45 mg in dark teas in an 8 oz serving. Mayo Clinic has a great chart comparing various drinks. I have found that honey acidity varies with type and source and that may affect sleep. I have tried contacting the source of the honey I use but they are not knowledgeable and I was going to use my aquarium pH strips to check.

FYI an ounce of dark chocolate (70+%) contains about 25 mg of caffeine as well

Healthy intestinal flora and not eating foods that have an inflammatory effect as well as avoiding medications or products (including skin) that are inflammatory affect also helps with resistance. As my teacher said ”on the body is in the body”

We had fried bologna and scrambled eggs when I was a kid. I remember just eating the fried bologna by itself. We also had kippers for breakfast. Dad was English and Mom was Irish. I remember her making Welsh Rarebit with onions as a quick dinner or lunch.
But just plain old bologna on white bread was the best and of course, who could forget mayonnaise sandwiches.

@imallears, Oh my word! Hadn't thought of "purely heaven" mayonnaise sandwiches in decades! Wonder if I could borrow a couple of slices of white bread from my friend to celebrate Spring??? Get thee behind me Satan! Mary, mayo sands just wouldn't be the same on the new and improved designer breads some of us have adopted. I'd probably eat a whole loaf of the white and never be able to get back to the "healthier" ones???? Could offer a couple of Snickers as a fair exchange?

That is really interesting, @contentandwell, because I'd heard the same and thought my older friend with the "deplorable diet" might have severe after vacc reactions but No! Not even a smidgen after either of the Modernas!

OTOH, a much younger, pre-diabetic friend who follows a "strict healthy only" diet, was the first I knew to have the Covid arm after her first vacc and was pretty miserable for 2-3 days following her second.

@mwsa1945, Thanks for this information on the caffeine differences between coffee and dark teas. So it makes sense that coffee's double whammy of caffeine makes the difference in sleep vs no sleep for some of us. Good to know!

@mwsa1945, Interesting! More reason to steer clear of pork and chicken skins!

Snickers is the only candy bar besides Reese’s peanut butter cup that I would steal from the kids Halloween baskets. Are you my sister lol! Seriously we would probably gag on a mayonnaise sandwich today. I know I feel bloated or get gas pains if I deviate too much from my regular foods. And I hate the smells of fast food eateries when I come near them. Only goes to show you can train your body and mind to reject unhealthy foods. The body knows.

If you like mayonnaise sandwiches, I strongly suggest this. I'm not affiliated with the company but just want to inform. PRIMAL KITCHEN sells mayonnaise that is so delicious AND it is made from avocados. I'm addicted to the stuff. As I eat my salmon salad sandwich I smile and think this is making me healthy. primalKitchenFoods. It seems like one of the good oils that spoken about by others.
