Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

what do you eat when you have cancer but you also have severe colitis and high cholesterol? My husband is having such a rough time finding food he can tolerate, much less enjoy! And it seems like the lists I've been given just cancel each other out! Any suggestions would be wonderful!

@annabannana . Great question. Is it ever possible to just have one thing wrong with us at a time?
There are no special cancer diets unless there is a restriction for treatments or medicines. Your husband should eat as healthy as he can. Fresh food, homemade food as much as possible .
Because he's having so much difficulty I would suggest making an appointment with a nutritionist. How does this sound? .what kind of cancer does he have?

melanoma, he had a tumor on his kidney that was removed, has had other skin cancer (basal), had his prostate removed, has rheumatoid arthritis, had shingles in the fall, and is currently healing from pneumonia. It's just been one thing after another over these past 4 1/2 years. I tried at 1st to be an expert on nutritional do's and don'ts, but learned at the time that I was better to support him emotionally and not be the "food police!" Now though, he's asking for help and I don't know where to go for good guidance with his multiple challenges. I'll definitely suggest he try to see a nutritionist when he's there for his next visit in the spring.

@annabannana - perhaps you might call your husband's Dr for a reference. He's suffering now. What foods can he tolerate now that he's not supposed to eat on another list? Many foods that he shouldn't eat for his colitis are also good foods to help lower his cholesterol.

He " cheats" with some things like avocados and onions but pays a price with the colitis if he goes overboard.

@annabannana I agree with @merpreb about speaking to a nutritionist. When your husband cheats, he knows the possible consequences so, as I remind myself when I do the same, "it's all on me!" I have a tendency towards gout, and usually pay very close attention to my diet. Eating healthy when you are experiencing a variety of disorders, is so important! If he has internet access, he can learn many good tips for his colitis issue. There may be some information at this link https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/ulcerative-colitis-at-62/ It is good your husband wants to look into how best to handle his diet, and we look forward to hearing about what he finds out.

Who’s got a great recipe that takes 5 minutes, doesn’t have a lot of ingredients, little clean up, can’t be fried, I’m getting tired of cereal and sandwiches any ideas???
Thanks in advance,
Jake

WOW & WOW again, I mean YOU not the site. You look EXACTLY, & I mean E X A C T LY like a lady who once cooked for me all the time.
Life was so good back then. Now, the website, I clicked on the Sweet potato casserole and what a terrifying experience. There were 17 ingredients SEVENTEEN!!! The only thing I could create with that many ingredients is garbage. Just thinking of all those dishes too. Jeez, talk about a horror film.
Thank you for posting the site even though I'll probably have nightmares tonight.
Take care,
Jake

Hi @grandchild Forks over Knives https://www.forksoverknives.com/ has great plant-based recipes. The pictures are enticing and the website is easy to follow. Thanks for the tip.

You'll have to take @jakedduck1 in stride. He is well known in the community as being frightfully allergic to all things cooking. And his humor is cheeky. Jake, for someone who doesn't like cooking, you spend a lot of time in this discussion about food and recipes. Do you think you might have a secret yearning to cook beyond toast. 🙂

@annabannana- Good morning. Have you gone to a nutritionist as yet? A lot of what you need is trial and error- all diets are like this. Try making a list of what he does eat, what he can and can't then find foods that are similar. But a good nutritionist is your best bet.
I would focus on his colitis and then adjust foods fr his high cholesterol. Also exercise will help with high cholesterol. Just taking the pills won't help much.
How is he feeling now? Is he losing a lot of weight?
