Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

EGGCREAMS!!,,Chocolate eggcreams are the best. It’s chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer in the right proportions and mixed by hand to get a nice frothy head much like the head on a beer. It’s rooted in the ethnic Jewish tradition and may have started in Brooklyn but definitely a NY thing. Someone was purported to have invented a special chocolate syrup. You can get it bottled in NY and it is a favorite in Long Island where I lived. I think there’s a few places in Manhattan where you can still order one.

As a teenager we had our favorite places to get them and usually drank them several times a week. There were a few other flavors like strawberry but I don’t think they caught on and I can remember the taste to this day.

You hate eggs? Good thing I didn’t suggest omelettes or frittatas. I only drink good wine...not a wine snob but know my wines. Recently sent back an inferior Pinot Gris at a restaurant. Was substituted for another more expensive label. It wasn’t the label they said it was. I was with family who are also wine drinkers and they agreed. Not an upscale restaurant so I let it go. It just completes a meal for me. And yes, I do have a wine refrigerator. That I made space for.

@imallears We have a wine fridge also, a small one that holds 47 bottles, plus our basement stays cools so we keep some there. Prior to my cirrhosis diagnosis, I actually had about 70 bottles of select wine that I was saving for various special occasions. My son and husband often gave me wines that were pricier than I would buy for daily consumption. Then I had to abruptly stop drinking wine. My husband only drinks cabs so many people were the recipients of some very nice wines.

I learned from that. Don't save special things, use them and enjoy them.

This is a delicious recipe, but maybe cut back on the sour cream. I added fresh portabello mushrooms, sliced tomatoes, 2 garlic cloves. We had it yesterday, and I'm looking forward to the leftover s! I used Monterrey jack, not provolone.

@user_chdb5e8ac Sounds delish. Hopefully, it can be made without the sour cream at all, my husband will not eat anything creamy. We love provolone though so I would probably use just that, and the parmesan. You could make it healthier too by using ground turkey instead of ground beef. I try to limit our beef consumption to one time a week.

@merpreb I have had that Rishi chai tumeric also. It is delicious.

My kidney doc wants me to eat an orange a day. I’ve had a few but not every day. I have kidney stones.

@jakedduck1 I have a friend with kidney stones. He was advised to cut back on potatoes of all kinds, increase citrus and cut potassium rich foods. He switched to lemonade and cut back on coffee. I know you are getting a lot of suggestions for smoothies and juices, but I suggest you go for the whole foods instead. You can take in many more calories than you intend to when you start drinking your meals, and they may not "stay" with you as long. As for making it easier to eat oranges, you could peel a bowlful and keep them in the fridge or maybe try mandarins (canned, although you are looking at more sugar again). My husband loves the halos because they are small and quite easy to peel.

When I was getting kidney stones I gave up two of my favorite foods, sweet potatoes and spinach. Problem is they are both high in oxalates. I take a potassium citrate prescription and am suppose to eat an orange daily. I can only drink milk (2 cups a day) and water. No smoothies, coffee, sodas, tea, no juices of any kind. Mainly because of sugar. I agree that whole foods are better, more fiber, and filling. I donate Platelets every two weeks and calcium disrupts the absorption of iron.

Yes, Almond milk is what I drink most but can only have 2 cups. If I have cows milk I drink non-fat usually but occasionally I’ll get courages and have 1% sometimes if I become to rebellious I’ll have 2%. When my friend was here she gave me some whole milk, it was like drinking cream. If almond milk, I drink the one with more calories, don’t like the non-fat equivalent. I’ve never seen oat milk only Almond, soy cashew & coconut.
They have zero calorie, non fat drinks but I’m curious if they are similar to diet sodas that are worse than the the regular stuff???

Lioness- Good morning. I have begun drinking Turmeric and taking supplements everyday now. What improvements have you found? I seem to have more pep and since this has only been a couuple of weeks I'm hoping that other things are happening inside of me that I'm not aware of.
Have you increased your intake of Turmeric ?

@merpreb I'm so glad you found it helps you Ive advocated this for a long time. That chi tea sounds delicious I will have to check it out. Today I just have know energy and going to babysit grandson today so need to get myself geared up for him. Just recently I had to get Prednisone from my Dr. the one on a sliding scale you know 6 down to 1 It has helped a lot to get rid of the inflammation for me . Now I have gone back to the ginger-turmeric tea but the chai tea I will get . I still do exercise 2 x a week and eating just the fruits and vegies. have a good day

@lioness- Oh I'm sorry that you haven't been feeling well. I hate prednisone and it hates me. Ginger is great for your stomach. Take care. Are you almost finished with it?

@merpreb Yes I finished it last week and am now starting to feel the pain . I'm drinking the ginger-turmeric tea as I write . Going to lay down then till I have to go. have a good weekend
