Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Feb 22, 2019

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Just Want to Talk Support Group.

@Jake- No one can force you to cook. You have gotten sympathetic support and recipes and recipe and food suggestions. So what will you chose to do?

Thanks Merry but prepared foods not allowed either. I’d like to go out for a glorious steak dinner with a monster baked potato with globs of butter, sour cream, chives and cheese also some asparagus smothered in cheese sauce and a Dr Pepper. Then stop by the cheesecake kitchen for dessert. It’s been over a year since I’ve gone out for a decent meal. After all it is my birthday. But my doctor would squawk big time. Oh well, the fantasy was nice while it lasted.

Happy Birthday, Jake.
Are you from a tradition of big birthday celebrations, or from a lower key kind of tradition? I remember that on our birthdays were able to choose what we wanted for dinner on our day.
With your limited food options, can you eat apples? I have a suggestion to go along with the foil meal - try a baked apple (in its own foil packet) Peel, core or slice to your specifications. sprinkle with cinnamon, and optional honey or brown sugar. Wrap and bake. Yum!

Good idea ! With everything going on and for me my taste changed so I am not enjoying good . I get nauseous everyday and I know if I don’t put something in I won’t be able to take my meds . So I work on not losing weight and if I am not getting much , that it is healthy and easy . The only foods that seem to taste like they should is fruit . So when I eat it’s for what I need . Could use some reminders of easy and getting nutrients I need .

During my cancer treatment, and since it finished 3 months ago, a cookbook called ‘Cancer-Fighting Kitchen’ by Rebecca Katz became, and still is, my go-to food bible. It contains nourishing, tasty recipes, including recipes for various side-effects of treatment. I particularly found the magic mineral broth (both the veggie & chicken versions) and the anti-nauseau cinammon drink to be life-savers during my chemo and subsequent treatment. RK also has a website, rebeccakatz.com.

@deirdrebrownw- welcome to Connect. Chemo can be nasty on the stomach. When I had chemo for lung cancer for 8 months my stomach was in an uproar. I'm so glad that you are able to calm your stomach down with brother. I chewed ant-nausea meds like candy. But they worked. What kind of chemo did you have? What is your cancer?

Who’s got a great recipe that takes 5 minutes, doesn’t have a lot of ingredients, little clean up, can’t be fried, I’m getting tired of cereal and sandwiches any ideas???
Thanks in advance,
Jake

Here’s a great 5 min high protein low carb snack that I hope you will enjoy! I love blueberries and so does my kids. This is simple enough that my 8 year old enjoys making it.

Hi, @deirdrebrownw. Welcome to Connect. Thank you for sharing your go-to-food bible. I haven't had cancer or chemo, but i was extrememly nauseous prior to my organ transplant. Cinnamon became one of my favorite tastes, and I know that I would have enjoyed the cinnamon drink. I am making myslf a note to tak a look at it afterwhile, because I think it will be a good one to have available.
I wish you well as you continue your life's journey. And I invite you to participate in any of the features on this Mayo Connect Community. If I can be of any assistance, just let me know.

@jakedduck1 I do this one and sprinkle with cinnamon. I cut the pieces into smaller chunks and do not peel then the pectin in the peeling makes a sweet sauce without the sugar. I also combine sweet potatoes peeled and sliced with the apple and even a few fresh cranberries to give it more zing.

That does sound tempting but the 1 min prep time seems to good to be true. It would take me longer just to get the stuff together. Wouldn’t be very good after I took out the salt😩, cream cheese😥,
butter 😭and Neurologist forbids artificial sweetener, seizure risk. Although I think Stevia is from a plant so not sure about that.
At 29 grams of fat my doc & nutritionist would beat me more senseless than I already am. Thank you though. Basically, if it’s good I can’t have it.
Thanks much,
Jake
