Body making too much Vitamin B6

Posted by granolamama @granolamama, Feb 15, 2019

I had many labs done this week in an attempt to figure out why I am dealing with chronic muscle and joint pain, and severe exhaustion and weakness. The results came back showing that my B6 (normal range is 2-20) is 116. I do take one supplement each evening, and my doctor said it’s far less than she even takes, and in no way would account for such a number. She is completely confused, saying she has never seen such a thing, and couldn’t even come up with any info on it. She will spend some time meeting with other doctors this weekend to brain storm.
I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this, or has any info. I am googling like a mad woman, and the only info I can find is about people taking too much B6 in supplement form, and the dangers of it in their system. Nothing whatsoever about a person’s body making too much. Ideas?

@granolamama, @redhead63 have you found out the cause of your Vitamin B6 levels being high?

The National Institutes of Health has a good information page on Vitamin B6 that might help you find some answers. Wondering if diet maybe part of the problem (foods containing B6) or vitamins/supplements taken daily that contain levels of B6 that you might not be aware of as having any B6 in them.

Hi there. Does your daughter also believe she has an auto immune disease? What are her symptoms? What was her doctor's feedback regarding her high B6 level? If you can provide more detail perhaps someone may have some feedback that might be of use to her. Best to you, Hank

Hello @anghines, I would like to add my welcome to Connect along with @jesfactsmon and other members. I know this has to be difficult for you as well as your daughter when you can't get the answers as to why you have a condition like Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), also known as Devic disease. The National Organization for Rare Disorders has some information that you might find helpful to learn more about the condition - https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/neuromyelitis-optica/. From what I've read, they really don't know what causes NMO.

You mentioned your daughter has high levels of vitamin B6 in her blood but she does not take any supplements. Have you discussed it with her doctor to see if there are other underlying conditions that may be causing the elevated B6 levels?

She lives in Illinois. Her Neurologist should be contacting her today . Hopefully. She does have many problems pedendral nerve damage and Gi problems I was hoping to see if someone may have been similar in this sight. The B6 is something new for us. 🙁

Sorry I misunderstood your mention of NMO, which I was not familiar with (thanks @johnbishop ). Regarding pudendal neuralgia, there is another discussion on Connect you or your daughter might find interesting regarding that: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/anyone-out-there-diagnosed-with-pudendal-neuralgia/?utm_campaign=search
Have you had any medical-related feedback about the B6 issue to this point? Hank

Foods high in vitamin B6 include fish, chicken, tofu, pork, beef, sweet potatoes, bananas, potatoes, avocados, and pistachios. High doses of B6 can cause much nerve pain.
