Trying to find the right medications for my depression/anxiety

Posted by brit @brit, Jan 10, 2019

I have had depression for quite a few year now. I am in my 70's and found it harder to deal with. My psychiatrist has been working with me trying to find the best medication. So far no luck. He is very dedicated and does a great job trying to help. Right now I am takin 2 medications but they don't seem to do the
job either. They are Doxepin 25 mg and chlordiazepox. Help!

Depression is hard. I have depression too. Severe at times. It always a juggling act with meds, side effects. Make sure you have a support group. This helps but you need in person connection too. If there's a NAMI in your area try that. Also have a safety plan. I recommend CBT and DBT therapy groups. Find activities and plan activities once a week with others. I know feeling hopeless is very difficult. I've been there. Some days I had no reason to get out of bed. Maybe keep a depression journal. Take action before you're too depressed. I'm sorry you're going through a hard time. Be kind to yourself.

2suscros68 Excellent advice! I am doing all of this as much as possible. I got out of the house - Drove by myself- Shopping and visiting past coworkers, 4 hours and it felt great! I slept 6 am till 9 pm the next day though. I am definitely a night owl. I am doing chair exercises too My body sure does hurt but I am not gonna stop. I am trying to find me again

I have to report that the mouthpiece I started using about a week ago seems to making a difference with my sleep apnea. I am dreaming again, and I do wake up with less anxiety and irritability. I’m almost afraid to say that it’s helpubg with my depression because my meds will help one day for an hour or two then stop working. It is so frustrating because you think you have the right meds and then realize that something is not working like it should.
Anyone have bipolar as a diagnosis? Just wonder if anyone else LOVES TO GO SHOPPING. This typical behavior has put me in a financial bind.

@petangelkat1 I loved to shop and spend money but I could budget most the time Try Cymbalta and You will not want to shop go outside or drive anymore (My side effects) My best friends used to laugh at me for shopping all the time Now they are happy to see me Go shopping Kinda crazy but true I was a financial adviser at one time so I have had a lot of resources to help myself and others. I had a 700 score before my divorce and now 10 years later can barely stay at 600. Rough divorce Do not take out the shark loans. Bad news

@catcatanzaro60 . Good morning! Yesterday, just to get out of the house, I went to lunch with a former coworker that I NEVER liked! But we got along OK and I had a nice time. Getting out with people makes such a difference!

@brit Zoloft is one of the older medicines but it works well! Takes at least 2 weeks for any noticeable change. I’ve had to slowly increase the dose over 20+ years when things get rough. In the summer I can decrease the dose because we have so much sun! nd, I’d rather use my lite book—no side effects! Be sure to let us know if the doctor is willing to use Zoloft. You deserve to feel better!

@breds1968 Sounds like you’re having an awful time! I’m so sorry. I just wish there was a quick way to make all of us better. Are you doing any talk therapy to help with the depression and anxiety! See if there is a mental health clinic in your area. Or check your health insurance to see what they cover. That’s how I started years ago. I’m with a therapist now and she has helped me thru some anxiety attacks. I wish you the best of luck!
