Blood Donation, whole blood, Platelets, Red Cells, Plasma

I’ve always wanted to donate but at 20 I was diagnosed with Hepatitis B so it never happened until I wised up a mere 45 years later when I asked for the Antibody and Antigen testing. Never had HepB
Have been deferred last 5 times mostly from low Hemoglobin. My doctor says I’m anemic from Chronic Illness. My question is how to build up my iron level, liver isn’t going to happen. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help,
Jake

I was so excited today at the Red Cross. My Hemoglobin was high enough to be able to donate. I was deferred 4 times for low hemoglobin and once for high blood pressure. Today I was able to donate Platelets. My doctor said I may have to stop giving blood.
I read only 5% of people donate. That’s a shameful number. Please donate. Each donation can potentially save 3 lives, who wouldn’t want to help save lives.
Help encourage your friends and families to donate.
Please give,
Jake

@jakedduck1 My dad donated every six weeks for over 20 years. I used to donate, but in 1988 when they diagnosed systemic lupus, I was told I could no longer donate. At that point I had even been matched for apherhesis and bone marrow donation.

@lioness I used to donate every chance I got until I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 20. My husband also donated until he developed a bloodborne illness. My oldest son has donated a great deal but has not started again since moving across the state. It is the easiest and best way to be helpful.

Hello all
The American Red Cross is currently experiencing a platelet emergency and I’m sure they are not the only organization with a shortage - and it's serious.

Whole blood can be stored for 42 days. Each platelet donation expires after only five days. During those five days, each donation must be tested, processed, packed and shipped to a hospital or cancer center. Over 50 percent of donated platelets are used for cancer patients of all ages. And the need never lets up.

We deeply appreciate all our donors, but our platelet donors are particularly special. Please give ASAP to help end the emergency. Just one donation may help save more than one life.

I hope whoever reads this can help fill the shortage. A very satisfying experience knowing you are helping others.
Thank you for reading,
Jake

@jakedduck1 Good for you, Jake! Will you get juice and cookies afterwards?
Just wondering, if you have cancer, can you give platelets?

They offer various things but I can only have water. Not allowed to have juice or snacks. My mean doctor won’t allow it. Can only drink water and 2 cups of milk a day. I lost 62 pounds but 20 more to go.
Here are issues that may prevent donating.
