Down in the dumps again – challenges with adult children

Posted by kdo0827 @kdo0827, Dec 27, 2018

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. I started taking Cymbalta and got off the other stuff. I was doing better but the past 2 months or so not so good. I’m struggling with feeling invisible and I’m feeling very unappreciated. I feel my kids only call when they want something or have a problem. They never ask how I’m feeling nor do they try and help. I had a procedure done yesterday and neither one bothered to check on me. Adding this to my depression isn’t good. Do any of you have these same feelings about your kids?What should I do?

Having Anxiety and being placed on a new medication can be uncomfortable. Recently I was prescribed a medication for high BP. With the help of others here I was able to take this medication. I was not invalidated for what I was experiencing and my BP is down some. Too many times I have been invalidated by doctors and hesitant to speak up. They see anxiety and invalidate. Grrrrr. Again, yeah team!! No, I was not a cheerleader but had a younger sister who was...to this day she can not speak below Mach 5. On the lighter side from one with anxiety.

@parus Don't be afraid to talk to your Dr. He needs to know how you feel on medicine if it bothers you there maybe an alternative he can give you

Can you tell mr med? I was put on one that is called Remeron but I seem to be having too many side-effects - nightmares, severe headaches, feeling like I have the flu.

@macjane Hello Jane,

I would encourage you to call your doctor and mention the symptoms. It could be that you are on too high of a dose and that reducing the dose would be helpful to you and relieve some of these symptoms. On the other hand, perhaps a different med might help with your symptoms. If you are comfortable sharing more: Were you prescribed Remeron to help with sleep?

Thanks for sharing your experience with the BP drug, @parus. You are so right! Doctors do not always treat anxiety as a real disorder but as more of an inconvenience to them. Finding a patient doctor who is willing to work with your anxiety about meds is a very rare thing. I'm glad that Connect was here for you.

Yes you’re right about listing every side effect. I, too have worked in the medical field for a long time. This medication mentions depression, fatigue, hallucinations and several other things that I’m susseptical to. I babysit my grandson during the week so I’m very Leary of trying this. I will try it on the upcoming 3 day weekend and see how it goes. Thanks for caring 🤗

That sounds like a good plan, @kdo0827. Trying it on a three day weekend would be a good test. Wishing you well.

@kdo0827 I’m really sorry to hear about your tough times. My sons, who live in-state, used to never call me, either. I even heard from my sister when the oldest got a big promotion, not my son! Now, I text them and always hear back. They’d rather not talk on the phone. I’ve made good friends with their wives and they always keep me posted.

You make a good point, @becsbuddy. Making friends with the sons' wives (or children) is a great way to keep connected with your family.
Thank you for sharing that wisdom.

@macjane Hello Jane:

In reading your post I noticed you wrote, "mr med." Perhaps that just a typing mistake, if so no problem. I just wanted to be sure that you were not directing it to someone specific.

@lioness Being friends with,a nd liking your sons wives is the key to relationship success! My mother-in-law never liked me from day 1! We never had a relationship. From age 13 on, she didn’t know her grandsons either because they never wanted to visit. Her loss
