Lap Band Surgery for weight loss

Posted by edmeek1 @edmeek1, Dec 23, 2018

I have had a lap band with great results for 8 years and hear now this procedure is rarely used because of complications. Should I have it removed?

Colleen, could you tell me what symptoms suggest a problem? I have had none but want to be on watch.

Good question, Ed. I think @sandym65 is in a better position to answer your question about symptoms to watch for. Some complications are listed in this article http://surgery.ucla.edu/bariatrics-lap-band-removal

I've had a lapband in 2008 in 2013 got massive damages from it. Among them were Ulcers, Reflux, GERD,huge hiatal hernia,
And worst of all erosion into stomach. Massive adhesions which plague me till today.
In 2016 emergency removal and switch to RNY bypass. Then came the small bowel obstructions and several re sections due
To adhesions and narrowing It was the price I paid to be thin ( 320 to 180 )
I have several friends with Lapbands. Most had them deflated due to complications. Two of my friends had them removed.

@brklimeks, I moved your question to this existing discussion about lap band surgery and weight loss.

Gastric band surgery or Lap-Band is one type of bariatric surgery procedure that involves placing a silicone band called the Lap-Band around your stomach.

@brklimeks: Is this a surgery you've had? Or considering?

Hi @brklimeks ,
Mayo Clinic does not currently place Lap-Bands. Check out this video for some of the surgical options we do have!

Thanks for letting me know. Also I viewed the video on gastric bypass surgery and found it very informative.

I've had band in 2008 Went from 320 to 170 First few years were great
in 2012 started to have severe complications including damage to esophagus and haital hernia
As long as you have no complications, i would leave it. Then you can decide if you want to convert to sleeve or RNY bypass like me. Best of Luck
