Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

Today I am grateful for an artist friend of mine. Last week she took a photo of a horse and carriage driver coming down the her quaint little cobblestone street in a Santa outfit. I admired the photo and told her it would make a perfect Christmas card. Yesterday when I walked by her gallery, she came running out with TWO sets of Christmas cards for me - and she wouldn't take any money. It was a beautiful, thoughtful gift of her talent and love. I'm attaching a photo so you can see!

Thanks so much and I’m definitely receiving your positive thoughts. We have to stay in the hospital for at least a couple of days. The infection went to the blood which complicated her condition. She’s somewhat weak and tired but in good spirits. I’m grateful to you @debbraw for caring and a couple of friends that visited us yesterday. Love to you and all who care for your love ones...

I love the Christmas card. That was so thoughtful of your friend. I am and artist and I have a horse too. It's a nice picture. Thanks for sharing it. I'm thinking my horse might look cute in a Santa hat.... (he'll do anything for a carrot)

@dorisa - I'm glad she's in good spirits. I'm going to PM you. I don't live far away and I can help if you need it.

@debraw Thank you so much for having this important discussion about Gratitude journals, and what to be thankful for on a daily basis! I have been ill and depressed lately, because smoke from my Neighbor's apartment, is causing me such an inability to breathe in my own apartment! I have lived across from a Neighbor who smokes 24/7! I have a Cooling Tower, which only works slightly; however, my inability to control my Environment has made me think twice about exactly what to be Grateful for at this point in my life! However, I am thankful for actually waking up this morning, for my family and friends; but mostly because I actually have a life worthwhile after having a severe Stroke on May 4, 2001! I am also thankful my Temple Community, which keeps things in perspective, and is helping me face the reality of life's bumps and the ability to bounce back after suffering emergency situations!
