how to take antibiotics?

Posted by norah @norah, Oct 22, 2018

this is my second time taking the big three antibiotics ,last time was 2015 when i also had lung surgery (left upper lobe) for cavities caused by Mac. Anyway last time i took my antibiotics before bed which worked well . Now the nurse said better to take 2 in the morning and strong Rifampin in the evening . Starting today so i’m curious friends how you take them . Also does it really matter much if you take them with or without food ? Your input would be greatly appreciated . thank you ,norah

Hi Norah, I find it better to take the big 3 with a cracker which I think the NJH advise now, it helps the stomach. If you have too much food I find my urine does not go orange which I feel means they wont work I take them all in the morning. All the best Heather

@heathert I was always so concerned about the red urine! I used to think anything that turns my urine that color can’t be good. My doctor at Vanderbilt explained that the red is just from the dye color of the pill being excreted. I was good after he told me that. (Irene)

@irene I know that I was told to have them with food and I was having them with a meal, the red wasnt happening and neither did any improvement in MAC. I changed to just a cracker or rice cake and it was all good, red . It can be scary though.

@norah try to have them with a cracker, then food an hour later. Make sure your urine is red/orange and they are doing their thing. Have a look at the National Jewish Hospital website, its full of great info.

I watched the video and it does help tremendously. However, the dose of Rifabutin I'm on says "1 capsule twice a day". In the video the Dr says to take it before bedtime. Does it matter if I took both at the same time as she suggested???
