Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?
I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

I was originally quoted $305/month by insurance. On the tymlos website there was a reference to a discount program and I could pay as low as $4/month. Ha...what were the chances. I called tymlos... Turned out that I met the criteria, one of which was having private/non government related insurance. Sure enough the specialty pharmacy at cvs reran the claim with the tymlos-provided ID number and my co- pay fell to $4/month. So before you decide the regimen will cost too much, check out the discount program.
Many thanks for info. I will explore as I have insurance through a university. However, they just changed the plan (midyear) to one with Medicare in the name, so I possibly will have to pay like tier one of new plan, $35. Certainly beats hundreds of dollars per month, however.
This is great news ... thank you for sharing!
I have 2 compression fractures in my spine...doc prescribed forteo but insurance will not cover it...so tymlos is the one supposedly. I'm very concerned about the side effects of these drugs....does anyone have and experience with side effects? I took Actonel...1 pill...and wound up with ulcers...that's why I'm worred about taking anything...but I have to do something!
I am going in for my shot demonstration tomorrow - I may do my first injection at her office. I know all of these meds have possible side effects and I postponed doing anything as long as I felt safe to postpone. The one good thing about the daily shot is that it doesn't build up and stay in your body so, at least according to my doctor, if you get side effects that you cannot tolerate once you stop they are gone. At least I haven't heard of any effect that continues once you quit the shots. So I figured I would try it, and if I cannot tolerate it I will try something else. I already have some gerd issues so oral bisphosphonates are out for me.
Hi chrissyp. I am on month 13 with Tymlos after a compression fracture of my L4. I have many allergies and was initially prescribed Forteo. After ten days on Forteo I had an allergic reaction. The doctor then prescribed Tymlos. I am doing well on Tymlos. I have experienced some fatigue as a side effect, but am used to it now. I know from experience how scary it is to consider a new drug. So far, so good for me. Hopefully you will do well with Tymlos.
Hi kdbones. I was willing to try Forteo and Tymlos given their short duration in the body. As an allergic person, I had to have the option of a quick exit, and a drug with a very short half life. As it turned out, I was allergic to Forteo, but was able to drop it quickly with no lingering issues. I am doing great with Tymlos. My allergist suggests it could be an issue with preservatives for me. Forteo and Tymlos use different preservatives. Good luck kdbones!
Thank you so much everyone...I'm waiting to hear from insurance company to see if they will cover tymlos... so happy I found this group! I'll let you know how it goes!!
Just finishing my first week of Tymlos - really no side effects as of yet. I am curious if you are only doing shots in the abdomen. I've heard mixed advise. My doctor's NP who gave me the shot demonstration said it didn't matter where I did the shot. I know someone from another major medical institution whose doctor said abdomen only because it entered the system faster. Were you told abdomen or anywhere (mostly abdomen or inner thigh for self-injection - through she said someone could give it to me in my arm as well).
Hi kdbones. Good news about your first week on Tymlos! I have only given the injection in my abdomen.
