After Iridotomy - eye pain and headaches 2 months later

Posted by dibr @dibr, Sep 28, 2018

I had a YAG iridotomy done July 24th because my angles were closed. No pain, no nothing … no symptoms. My left eye was done first and yes it hurt but in 5 minutes, pain was gone. A whole different story with my right eye. The initial laser zap was an unbelievable pain that I have ever experienced (I have a very high tolerance for pain) and it never went away and I also had extreme headache on right side as well. I asked the opthamologist what happened because of the extreme pain and headaches. He said nothing. I asked if everything was ok, he said yes. I continue to have headaches and pain in my right eye 2 months later. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had an LPI, laser peripheral iridotomy 2 months ago and have been suffering from severe migraines ever since with no explanation or solution.

In my opinion iridotomy is the worst thing ever happened to the people

Are they migraine type headaches? How long have you been suffering with them?

Hi. I had the irodtomy in my left eye 10 days ago, and have constant pressure and headache. Did your headache go away? Quite worried

How are you feeling? I just got this done and have had a constant headache and pressure. Maybe I need to have the procedure done again. The doctor said he put two holes, one as a backup. Quite unsettling

Welcome, @gwenr @mgtbren and @karen888. It sounds like all three of you are experiencing headaches after laser iridotomy. I can imagine that is quite unsettling - to say the least. Has anyone raised this unwanted side effect with their ophthalmologist?

Yes. He checked my eye pressure, which was 17 at the time. Gave me soothing eye drops, but had no explanation of the pain and headache. Two weeks later and I STILL have headaches and pain in my eye. Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm quite worried

Hello. Will try to keep short.... I live in Ontario Canada. Ten years ago I had some laser surgery in our small City and it was because of seeing flashing lights and the ophthalmologist never really explained it all to me and after I have floaters etc. in both eyes
2018 happened to be referred to another ophthalmologist for very red sore eyes where I live then saw a Head of Department eye doctor in Toronto who is very well known and smart and he dianozed narrow angle Glaucoma. A lot was gong on in my life then and put off having his recommended Iridotomy in 2020 but not in Toronto by him as could no longer travel the 4 hours each way.
BTW I got my adult daughter and husband to visit the same Optometrist as I had where I live and off he sent them both for Iridotomies.... saying it was "preventative" but did they really need them? I find many people are getting them done now as assurance for future but are they really necessary? Sort of like having appendix taken out if they happen to have your absomen open for other surgery!
Hope am not off topic but have a small question today: sore eyes, probably allergies or ? and am wondeirng if I can use VISINE RED EYE DROPS. The bottle says don't use if have Glaucoma but as i have had Iridotomy can I use it? I have emailed Visine but not sure if I will get a reply and my Optometrist doesn't seem particularly interested in me any more and now sends me to his partner for annual eye checks!
From reading comments, my thoughts are with you, so scary having these eye issues and looking back I wish I had somehow found a way to go back to the head of that eye department in Toronto as I feel he would have all the answers ... when things don't go as planned we need only the best!!
