Leg swelling

Posted by devineone @devineone, Sep 3, 2018

Does anyone who has ALAmy have leg swelling. We are not sure if the leg swelling is from fluid build up due to kidney failure or Amy or combination. We will going for a pleural effusion tomorrow due to fluid build up around the lungs but this will probably not help the legs we hope to get some answers.

@devineone I have and have had leg and foot swelling on both sides for the last few years. various medicos have told me everything from "This is very bad" to "This is nothing. Wait till it gets worse". So two things. Keep feet and legs elevated as high as you can. And keep moving as best you can, even with your feet and legs up. My current worst problem in this area is that my right foot swells so much I can barely get my shoe on.

Yes I have a lot of edema. My nephrologist said it’s due to the Amy proteins that damage the kidney. The kidney leaks out ingested protein into urine so blood protein is low. This causes oncotic pressure to draw out fluids into tissues.

@crissy2450 Yup, you have a good nejphrologist. Mine says this doesn't mean anything, so ignore it! PPPHHHHHTTTTT!!!!!

My Mom had a fall and has a hairline fracture of her tailbone. Her legs are swelling drastically. No blood clots and not congestive heart failure. Dr. Seems at a loss. Does anyone have any experience or advice? She is 97.

Hi Greenball, I can imagine that you are very worried, especially since the doctor seems at a loss. I wonder if @johnbishop @hopeful33250 or @oldkarl have any thoughts.

I'm glad that blood clots and heart failure have been ruled out. What has the doctor offered to keep her comfortable while you continue to search for answers?

Hello @greenball, I'm so sorry to hear that your Mom fell and fractured her tailbone. I know that has to be very painful for her and worrisome for you. I found some information that may be helpful for things to try. Cleveland Clinic has some management and treatment information on the website for Tailbone Pain and also some things to try for Swollen Feet and Ankles.

-- Swollen Feet and Ankles: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/6-best-ways-relieve-swollen-feet-ankles-home/

Have you tried elevating and/or icing your Mom's legs to see if it helps with the swelling?

Greenball, I can only guess that she pulled something loose on her tailbone, such as a tendon, muscle, etc, or bruised the vertebrae just above it. keeping her legs higher than her hips might help some, and cold on her upper legs. oldkarl

Hello @greenball,

So sorry to hear of your mom's fall. It certainly has resulted in a lot of problems. Until she can get a second opinion of what is causing the swollen legs, I recommend, as others have, that she keep her feet elevated. If she has a recliner or an adjustable bed this could help her be more comfortable. Ice packs for the tailbone pain would probably be helpful in numbing that area until it heals.

Have you considered getting a second opinion regarding the swollen legs?
