Low blood pressure

Posted by Karenatmayo @karenatmayo, Jul 26, 2018

I have low blood pressure and will see my primary care physician soon about it. (I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, ugh, last year and had whole brain radiation and now taking iBrance and letrozole. I also have afib, lucky me, and take metroprolol which I know course lowers blood pressure. I feel better after I eat a meal. I will have to see what primary care doctor says about low blood pressure. Wondering how anyone else deals with low blood pressure. I am 69.

Maybe you need to back off on metrolol . I take a 50mg in the morning.. How about you?

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Several months ago they lowered the metroprolol to 12.5 mg per day (half a tab).

Thank you. Glad you are doing well on the metoprolol.

I stopped metroprolol last week at the direction of my doctor, because it lowers my blood pressure too much (I have low blood pressure to begin with). Just went to doctor again to follow up. Since I stopped metroprolol and I drink more water every day, I have felt much better and the a-fib is better (less episodes),. I found out something I never knew before - that blood pressure goes down when you are dehydrated, and you get dehydrated when you lose weight and I have lost a lot of weight recently because of cancer treatments started a year ago. So doctor told me to only take metroprolol if I am having an a-fib episode. Thought I’d pass on this useful information.

Thank you for the info. Glad your feeling better. I just started talking metoprolol at night. A small dose.

My blood pressure has always measured about 80/60. Was always told by doctors that as long as there were no other medical issues, this was not a problem and that I would probably live a longer life. I am now 70 years old. Is this still good advice?

I think the 120/80 guideline is just that....a guideline. Mine is 80/50 or 90/60 on a regular basis. I have naturally low BP, and I'm on meds for my heart which make it even lower. I do monitor it regularly, and make sure that I get up slowly, etc. I think each of our bodies are different, and what is "normal" for you and me might not be normal for others.

After open heart surgery I was taking a low dose of metoprolol (12.5 mg. twice a day) and had some really low B/Ps' (84/52) so my doctor told me to take the 12.5 only once a day. It's better.
