Spotting on and off for more than a week

Posted by aoisakurachan @aoisakurachan, Jul 8, 2018

Hey folks,
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and what it turned out to be. I have been very lightly spotting on and off for a little over a week (June 30th -today, July 8th). My period was expected the 5th but I didn't get it. I took a preggo test today and it came up negative. I HAVE been getting the mild nausea and all that jazz, with no change in medication or any thing.Has any one else had this? What ended up happening?

@aoisakurachan Welcome to connect. I see you just joined today.

A lot of things can affect a womans period. It is too difficult to say. Also there are no Dr's on connect who can diagnose anything. I can tell you from experience that sometimes you can just skip a month. You can have one month with a light period too. Your period can be 2 weeks late. If your very stressed for any reason that can also mess up your cycle.

Woman's period cycles also change every so often, I want to say about every 7 yrs. mine did.

They say if it's more than 2 weeks late to check for pregnancy. If you not feeling better or are very anxious I would reccomend calling your OB/GYN.
Wishing you best.
Jackie

Hi, @aoisakurachan -- I wanted to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Good idea to do some research and see what you could find about the spotting you've experienced.

Here is some Mayo Clinic information about what is normal or not with menstrual periods that I thought you might find helpful: https://mayocl.in/2ssu5gN.

I also wanted to introduce you to a few members who have talked about menstrual period irregularities for themselves or a loved one, like @confused77 @swilliams55 @violetmiles160 @behavioralsci @mmzs4000. Hoping they may have some insights from their experiences. @gailg may also have a thought.

@aoisakurachan -- have you considered calling your doctor's office or a nurse line there to see if they could offer any input by phone?

Hi ladies, Thank you for your help! I have talked to a few different people. I did call my GP and she'd said it sounded like classic pregnancy and advised me to take a pregnancy test again a few days later.

I had also talked to a pregnancy counselor with the American Pregnancy Association who'd said the same.
I'm just not sure of anything right now. I've never been here. My periods are and always have been pretty reliable, and that's why I'm so thrown off!

Hello everyone, I have had a history of unbalanced hormones causing my cycle to be a little off. Last month my cycle was 4 days late and when I did get it it was very heavy with clots (TMI SORRY 😐) thin the 3rd day it slowed up a bit. Everyday it became lighter (spotting) for the remaining days. I also had my cycle longer than usual (8days) now 2 weeks before my cycle starts again I’ve been spotting light pink to light red for the last 7 days. Anyone ever experience this type of spotting between periods?

Hi, @lovingmy2boys - I wanted to join @lioness in welcoming you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I can imagine that seeing differences from what you are used to in your menstrual cycle might cause you to wonder about it. About 16 years ago, I had a really unusual experience for my cycle and bled a ton all over the seat in my car, with my normal changing the tampon, etc. I went to the ER and was checked out, and ultimately it could not be attributed to anything - I was more or less told it was an inexplicable anomaly. This never happened again.

Mayo Clinic has a helpful article on what's normal and not for periods, which I thought I'd share: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/womens-health/in-depth/menstrual-cycle/art-20047186.

I'm hoping that @aoisakurachan and @travelgirl will return and offer some input on your cycle that was late, very heavy then thinned, lasting longer than normal with spotting over multiple days and then some further spotting 2 weeks out from your next cycle. @hopeful33250 may also have some thoughts.

I also think that contacting your doctor, a nurse line in your doctor's office or sending a message in a secure portal to your provider would help clarify and help you feel better. Have you gotten to get ahold of your doctor over the day today? Are you feeling okay?

Hello @lovingmy2boys,

I'm glad you posted about this concern. I think that @lioness and @lisalucier are correct about the need to contact your doctor's office by phone or through the patient portal.

In the meantime, if you are comfortable sharing more, could you explain your comment, "history of unbalanced hormones causing my cycle to be a little off" How long ago was this diagnosed? How has it been treated?

You also do not mention your age, but sometimes as we reach into our 40's some pre-menopause symptoms can happen and they can make the monthly cycles different.

Perhaps this is a one time experience and will not happen again, but I would be sure and let your doctor know about it since it was not typical for you.

Same is the case with me. I have my period for as long as 12-13 days. Then again a dry phase for few days and then lite pink spotting or mild bleeding during ovulation and then with over a week gap, I again get my regular period. However, my periods are not heavier. But this whole month saga is killing my time and peace. My workouts are getting affected. I miss my schedules badly. Its been since years, no doctor has any explanation. This has caused me not even any anemic. But somehow I figured out thru my blood work my ferritin levels are suboptimal side(not lower but normal side with lower levels) I am an active person, so started supplementing with liquid iron that has B6,B12,folate. Also with other supplements for my adrenal fatigue. This has changed the whole game for me. Now my spotting reduced from 13 days to 8 days. Still better. And even the ovulation is healthy.

I advice, for women in child bearing ages, please keep getting your iron and b12 levels checked periodically till menopause or even after, still better. If you are an active person, deal with stress, feel fatigued always, may be with doctors second opinion, you should be supplementing with b12 and iron to keep up the energy stores.

Try supplementing with natural things. There are aplenty. Choose wisely accordingly.
