Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?
It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

@bdade59 I found you post relating to kidney disease and foods. I have just recently been introduced to low phosphorous and low potassium food consumption. I was a long term Type I brittle Diabetic until I received a pancreas transplant in 2011. I have many limiting diets (carbohydrates, dairy, fiber, fats, oxalates; and not phosphorous and potassium) so foods are a balancing act for me. One thing that I eat that pings on all areas is bananas. I limit to one a day, but keep eating them because of the large areas of benefits. Everything is a trade off and I do the best I can with fresh, natural foods like carrots, celery, onions, zucchini, and cabbage; frozen peas, brussels sprouts, and green beans; cabbage, and canned dry beans (pinto, chili, black) and tomatoes. For meats I prefer oven roasted chicken and fish with ground beef and an occasional beef steak or roast. Pork is not a favorite, but I do occasionally enjoy a pork roast with sauerkraut. Rice is my preferred starch, with pasta as a secondary and white bread as a last choice.
My favorite meal components are white rice, roasted chicken or fish, and corn, peas or carrots with some salsa on top. I have taken to enjoying a slice of angel food cake with strawberries as dessert twice a day. If I make larger than needed meals I can combine the extras for meals for several days. That makes life easier to just heat and eat on my tougher days.

@owunezi, I want to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I do not know iif there is an answer your question, but I do know that there are things that you can do to hopefully protect your kidneys. owunezi, Is this a one time reading or part of a downward trend? What has your doctor told you about your GFR?
@owunezi Normal eGFR is >60 from my laboratory. Mine has been running in the 20's for 3 years. Recently I was hospitalized with an underlying bladder infection and given a battery of tests. I came home with medication changes, temporary changes and several new diagnoses. The good news is that my eGFR went from 24 to 34. I am really excited about that. In my opinion, if you are doing everything you can to keep your kidneys at eGFR 50, you will die with your native kidneys. Please talk to your physicians and find out (a) what is causing your kidney damage; and (b) what you can do to prevent or slow further damage. My kidneys are at risk from long term brittle Type I diabetes and immune suppressants for a pancreas transplant 8 years ago. Good luck.
I am happy to report that I am at home, very fatigued, with medication changes and several additional diagnoses. I am in the process of journaling to get a personal handle on my overall health. I often think that my life experiences are too bizarre to be believed. I am doing well and resting like crazy! Having a good day, hoping you are too!

Good news! GFR now up to 33 (it was 24 in Feb) when neph decreased diuretic and I continued diet and kept using the recipes I posted, neph says both things are responsible for the improvement. Neph also recommended I keep protein below 35 grams daily, which I have done, and BUN and creatinine now are lower. So have moved back into stage three. I took her the next-to-last copy of my cookbook and as soon as she and primary have vetted it and I have made any necessary corrections, I'll post the final copy here so stay tuned!

@msslj, there's a rough draft version of most of the recipes posted here already. It's in one of my earlier posts. Just bear in mind it contains errors and since posted I've done a lot of revision, though some recipes have stayed the same. Absolutely no guarantees they'll work for you but it's worth a try. Docs are busy peeps so may be sev wks before they get back to me with suggestions, then I'll edit and correct for a final draft. Sorry for the delay.
